HMS Shah took Sir Garnet Wolseley to take over from Lord Chelmsford in the Zulu War landing at Durban on 4th July 1879.
In 1892 HMS Shah was de-commissioned and in May that year she was towed by HMS Narcissus from Portsmouth to Bermuda.

HMS Relentless, HMS Repulse, HMS Resolution; fine names, names to gladden the heart of every true Brit and dismay any foreigners with a grasp of English.
My first assumption was that these names had been chosen by some fresh faced innocent unaware of their connotations, but a careful reading of the index suggested that the choice of such names was deliberate and malicious.
But it is hard not to imagine the crew of HMS Narcissus leaning over the side to admire their reflections in the water, or the crew of HMS Spanker being accosted by leather-clad masochists in dockside bars.

My father Stanley Gregory served on HMS Marigold and was one of those lost when she was sunk by aircraft off the coast of Algiers on the 9th of Dec. 1942.
I am researching HMS Pennywort and I am looking for information, photos of the ship and her crew.

She was built as the yacht NARCISSUS in 1905, tonnage 687 or 816 according to source!
Many of the crew were merchant navy serving as naval auxiliaries and are commemorated on the Liverpol Memorial to merchant navy personnel serving in the Royal Navy.
