A long absence of a Norfolk in the Royal Navy was finally ended in the commissioning of County-class heavy cruiser HMS Norfolk (78), which displaced 10,035 tons.
In September 1931, Norfolk was part of a mutiny that later became known as the Invergordon Mutiny.
At the outbreak of war in 1939, Norfolk deployed with the Home Fleet, and was involved in the chase for the German battlecruisers (or light battleships) Gneisenau and Scharnhorst, along with the Admiral Scheer.

In an instant on the morning of the 24th of May, 1941, the Royal Navy lost the symbolic flagship of its fleet and the battleship Bismarck, which would have otherwise had an interesting but unremarkable history, was transformed into one of the most well-known ships of the war.
At 2002, a message from cruiser HMS Suffolk reported the enemy as one battleship and one cruiser, course 240 degrees, in a position that translated to some 560 kilometers distant and almost directly north of the battlecruiser force.
Fourteen hundred fifteen officers and men of H.M.S. Hood were killed in the explosion, or died in the water shortly thereafter.

When the first reports of the Bismarck were received the British cruiser HMS Suffolk was already patrolling the Denmark straight and was due to be relieved by another cruiser HMS Norfolk.
On the 22 May at about 1922 hours the HMS Suffolk sighted the German ships about to leave the straight and head out into the Atlantic, she immediately started to tail the two German ships and was soon joined by the HMS Norfolk.
