A long absence of a Norfolk in the Royal Navy was finally ended in the commissioning of County-class heavy cruiser HMS Norfolk (78), which displaced 10,035 tons.
In September 1931, Norfolk was part of a mutiny that later became known as the Invergordon Mutiny.
At the outbreak of war in 1939, Norfolk deployed with the Home Fleet, and was involved in the chase for the German battlecruisers (or light battleships) Gneisenau and Scharnhorst, along with the Admiral Scheer.

The HMS St. Zeno fired a shot at the Ashkhabad, under the authorization of the commanding officer of the HMS Hertfordshire, who was in command of all British armed trawlers at Morehead City.
His explanation was that he thought the HMS St. Zeno might sink the Ashkhabad and extinguish the fire, which he considered a menace to a large convoy expected in the vicinity.
She returned to Norfolk in the summer of 1970 and was deactivated on October 1, 1970.

My name is Michael Coomer, I served on HMS BRIGHTON from 1961 to 1963 and I still have the tankard given to each member of the crew, I had a ships crest which is now in the British Legion at Tidworth and has been there since 1964.
I have very fond memories of my service on HMS BRIGHTON and at 16 1/2 years old i joined her in Clydebank when she was commisioned new in 1961.
Once at Norfolk we were then supposed to go on to Freeport in the Bahamas, but we only got as far as Cape Fear, of North Caroling and had to turn back due to engine trouble.

The first RN cruisers built within the confines of the Washington Naval Treaty of 1922, limiting standard displacement for heavy (8in gun) cruisers to 10.000 tons.
Both ships took part in the final action with the Bismarck, Norfolk expending 527 of 8in shells and 8 torpedoes and Dorsetshire 254 shells and 3 torpedoes of which 2 hit and finally sank the German ship.
Took part in the action in which Scharnhorst was sunk and was herself hit by 2* 11in shells, one of which went through 'X' ring bulkhead and roller path and overboard without exploding, while the other travelled across the ship and burst near the far tide above the lower deck.

The guided missile destroyer departed Norfolk 24 August 1965, visited numerous Mediterranean ports, and participated in vital training and readiness exercises with the 6th Fleet before returning to her home port 17 December 1965.
The remainder of the year was spent on various exercises in the Caribbean and in port in Norfolk in preparation for a Mediterranean deployment which commenced 10 January 1968.

Upon my arrival to the Norfolk area (I believe that the train actually stopped in Portsmouth), I didn't have the slightest idea where I was or what to do next.
Unfortunately across the street were two of Norfolk's finest who told me that they would arrest me and take me down to the station; unless of course I was in the Navy.

HMS Fife was shipshape and Bristol fashion that day and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour, especially as I'm ex-US Navy and a destroyerman for life.
Served on HMS Fife (D20) March 1982-85, I remember being crash drafted to the Fife (Banana Boat) from a cushy job at PCG in HMS Vernon at the start of the Falklands only to find she was still in refit.
There was a good documentry series here on HMS Brilliant and a run she made through the Med probably back in the late 80's early 90's It is sad to realise the old ships are either scrap or sold to third world navies especially the leanders and the County Class.

Colonel Arnold devised the early massive building and engineering program for HM Dockyard, that led to Bermuda being referred to later as the "Gibraltar of the West." His accomplishments, skills and obvious leadership qualities in Bermuda were such that he was marked for prompt promotion and increased military responsibilities.
On October 29, a draft of two corporals, one bugler and 78 private soldiers was sent out to the 46th Regiment in Bermuda by the 32nd Regiment then at Fort Tregantle.

On January 4, 1989 while conducting routine flight operations in international waters on her 12th Mediterranean cruise, F-14's assigned to the Kennedy shot down two Libyan Mig-23's that were approaching the battle group in a hostile manner.
When JFK arrived in Norfolk, VA on March 28, 1991, her crew was witness to the greatest homecoming celebration and outpouring of public support since World War II.
JFK then spent the next four months in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard where extensive repairs and maintenance on engineering and flight deck systems made the Kennedy ready to handle the F/A-18 Hornet to replace the aging A-7E Corsair II's that had flown off the Kennedy's deck during her last deployment.

HMS Sheffield, the lead and name ship of the class was the first to succumb to the daring attacks by the Argentinian Air Force, on the Fourth of May 1982.
Norfolk was the lead ship for this extremely successful class, and pioneered the new systems of the class; VL Sea wolf, the Merlin helicopter, the Type 996 3-D search radar, fixed Cray-Marine torpedo tubes and the Type 2031Z towed-array passive and Type 2050 hull-mounted active sonars.
Except for HMS Iron Duke, all of this class are named after Dukedoms, and although these names have come under some criticism for being 'soft' and uninspiring, they are actually far from soft in terms of historical events and figures of importance.
