The fourth HMS Ocean was a battleship displacing 12,950 tons and armed with four 12-inch and twelve six-inch guns.
She was launched in 1898, designed to be able to transit the Suez Canal.
She became part of a squadron comprising HM Ships Albion, Irresistible, Majestic, Triumph, and Vengeance, which from March 1, 1915 bombarded various forts and strait defences.

The second HMS OCEAN was built in Woolwich Dockyard and launched on 24th October 1795 and commissioned on 3rd December 1795.
Her sail area with double top sail totalled 25,000 ft. OCEAN was launched on 19th March 1862 and emerged finally with 24 x 7 inch guns muzzle loaded rifled and with a complement of 605 officers and men.
OCEAN was abandoned with all hands safe at 19.30 and the ship finally came to rest in the depths of Marlo Bay at 22.30 that same day.

HMS Ocean took Irresistible in tow, but she also hit a mine and both ships were lost in deep water.
Having enjoyed thirteen years in service, the rusting remains of HMS Ocean now lie in a watery grave off the southern shore of The Narrows, just to the south of the wreck of HMS Irresistible, who she was trying to rescue.

Ocean is powered by two Crossley-Pielstick diesel engines, which produce 17,700 hp and give her a speed in the order of 18 knots.
Ocean number four was a Canopus-class, 12,950-ton battleship launched in 1898.
Problems during build led to her being regarded as an unlucky ship, and although she won hounours at the Suez Canal and the Dardanelles in 1915, she was hit by a mine and shell, and all hands abandoned ship hours before she sank.

HMS Ocean built at Devonport Dockyard, laid down 15th February 1897, launched 5th July 1898 and completed in February 1900.
HMS Ocean served most of her early years in the China Station and returning to the UK in 1905 following the Anglo-Japanese Alliance and in January 1906 she joined the Channel fleet until June 1908 then moving to the Mediterranean.
HMS Ocean took part in the Persian Gulf operations in October 1914 then moving to the Mediterranean where she was sent to the Dardanelle's in February 1915 and on the 18th March 1915 she was damaged by gunfire then hit a floating mine.

The christening ceremony, which consists in breaking a bottle of wine over the bows of the vessel, and wishing her success in her ocean career, was performed by Lady Hotham, wife of Vice-Admiral Sir Charles F Hotham, K.C.B., Commander-in-Chief at the Nore.
To this must be added another 300 tons for the cradle which is built round the forward and after ends of a vessel to bring the weight down on to the ways.

Although generally similar in appearance to the Canopus class they can be distinguished from them by the wider spacing of the funnels and by the forward funnel being closer to the foremast.
HMS Irresistible was one of several British and French old battleships sunk in the failed Dardanelles campaign.
After striking a mine attempts were made to tow the ship out of the straights but enemy fire, the ship listing too heavily and the ship sent to tow her (HMS Ocean) running aground forced the attempt to be called off.

In 1898 J.P. Holland launched his submarine and it was commissioned the USS Holland.
He produced The "Argonaut", a 36-foot submarine that could operate in the open seas on the surface, at any desired depth, navigate on the ocean floor as an automobile drives on land, and would allow a diver to exit and enter through an open hatch.
The phenomenal success of the 1898 two thousand mile journey from Norfolk to New York brought a congratulatory telegram from Jules Verne to Simon Lake.

HMS Albion was a British Canopus-class pre-Dreadnought battleship of approximately 14,000 tonnes, with a main armament of 4 x 12 inch (305 mm) guns and was built by the Thames Ironworks and Shipbuilding Co. Ltd, launched in 1898 and commissioned in 1901, serving on the China Station until 1905.
She spent the next few years in home waters, until the outbreak of the First World War in 1914, when she proceeded to join the Cape and East Africa Station.
While doing so, two of her sister ships, HMS Goliath and HMS Ocean were sunk in the engagements, and Albion herself was badly damaged while supporting the Gallipoli landings.
