In 1982, HMS Onyx took part in the Falklands War, the only conventional submarine of the RN to do so, landing members of the SBS.
HMS Onyx is now at Birkenhead, Merseyside, where another Falklands veteran, HMS Plymouth, is located.
A further submarine, HMS Otus, is harboured in Sassnitz, Germany on the island of Rügen and can be visited.

HMS Onyx was on a visit to Plymouth when the summons came.
Onyx had a double role, as well as adding the submarine deterrent, she could also be employed in reconnaissance and "cloak and dagger" operations, taking periscope photographs of enemy installations and likely landing areas for small groups of Special Forces.
Onyx was better suited for this as she could move closer inshore where her silence of operation afforded her extra protection.

HMS Onyx is an Oberon class diesel-electric (SSK) submarine and is preserved at the Historic Warships Museum in Birkenhead.
Onyx was the last of the Oberons build for the Royal Navy, being laid down in 1964 at Cammell Laird Shipyards, Birkenhead and commissioned in 1967 [2].
Visitors to the museum are able to go on board HMS Onyx and see a good deal of the ship, A friend and I took several pictures of her on a recent visit which I present here.
