  The Penelope Association
The PENELOPE Association was established in 1987 to bring together those who had served in the Royal Navy cruiser of that name (1936-44).
This name was chosen for the unit because of the adoption of HMS Penelope (cruiser) during the war years.
The association holds an annual reunion weekend in Blackpool, normally the weekend nearest the 18th February, that being the date the cruiser was sunk off Anzio with the loss of 417 lives.

HMS Penelope (F127) was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy (RN).
HMS Penelope was launched on the 17th August 1962 and commissioned on the 31st October 1963.
Penelope was intended to be part of the Salisbury-class and was to have been named Coventry (and before that Panther), but instead became part of the Leander-class.

Penelope was holed by a near miss and sustained further damage whilst in dry dock.
HMS Argus, commissioned in 1918 as the first flush-deck carrier, and HMS Eagle were the carriers that escorted the convoy as far as ‘The Narrows’ between Sicily and Tunis at which point they, and the rest of the main escort, detached and returned to Gibraltar.

My nan lost her brother on HMS Lively in ww2 and is ill herself and is always going on about how did he and the ship die/go down do you have any references to put her mind at rest please.
A report on some of the actions in which HMS Lively was involved in during her short time in the Mediterranean prior to her being sunk on the 11th.
The two German tansports in the convoy Maritza (2910 BRT) and Procida (1842 BRT) are both sunk by HMS Penelope and HMS Lively dispite the presence of the Italian torpedo boats Lupo and Cassiopea.

HMS Penelope was again damaged on the 18th of December 1941, as part of the British K force she, along with HMS Neptune, HMS Aurora, HMS Kandahar, HMS Lance, HMS Lively and HMS Havock encountered an Italian minefield off Tripoli.
HMS Penelope was repaired at Malta but was bombed during the repairs on 26 March 1942.
Joined H.M.S. Penelope in Portsmouth and after a week or so steaming off Portland and where, incidentally was issued with cold weather clothing, so we had a fair idea that we would be going somewhere warm and we were right, we were soon to be back in Gibraltar and operating in the Med.

The Italian submarine Torricelli was forced to the surface and sunk off Perim in gun-battle by the British destroyers HMS Kandahar, HMS Kingston, HMS Khartoum and the British sloop HMS Shoreham.
HMS Neptune and HMS Kandahar sank while HMS Aurora was badly and HMS Penelope was lightly damaged.
HMS Aurora was patched up at Malta before returning home for repairs at Liverpool from April to June 1942.

Penelope listed to starboard as the sea rushed through the torn hull, then she began circling to starboard, her steering gear damaged, in effect no lights, aft engine room out of action, no steering, no telephones and 9 degree list to starboard.
Penelope capsized with a column of water that shot into the air, smoke belching from the after funnel and the boiler room exploded and flooded.
Penelope had broken her back, two ends pointed upwards, the bow at an angle of 50 degrees.

Laid down in May 1934, HMS Penelope was the third of the four 5,000-ton Arethusa-class cruisers.
Nicknamed "HMS Pepperpot" because of the considerable shrapnel damage she sustained, HMS Penelope is thought to have been the inspiration for C.S. Forester's novel, "The Ship".
In keeping with their frequent practice, JSC has included in the kit a model of another ship, the River-class frigate HMS Spey, which had a very active war after which she was transferred to Egypt, where she was still extant in 1995.

She was eventually towed to Baltimore, arriving on 24 June, where the ship was repaired and returned to service in 1943 as Annibal 1943 - HMAS Pirie, a minesweeper, and the British vessel Hanyang bound from Milne Bay to Oro Bay were attacked by a large force of enemy planes.
Battleships HMS Queen Elizabeth and FS Richelieu are part of this fleet 1945 - USS Missouri & Enterprise are damaged by Kamikaze attacks off Okinawa along with USS Kidd, Samuel S. Miles and an LCS(L).

Penelope however, was forced to stay throughout most of April until early May. To aid in maintaining the secrecy of her location, the crew had to paint her in the unique brown and white camouflage scheme to match the surrounding snow covered slopes of the mountains.
Penelope and the other ships hiding in Skjelfjord slipped away on the 10th May, having suffered many near misses.
I wanted to include HMS Jupiter (adapted from WEM's HMS Kashmir) in the dio but by trying the respective hulls in different positions it became quite obvious that the scene would be too crowded with ships and would lose the 'lonely' feel I wanted to portray (see picture above).

In 1786 he transferred to HMS Pegasus, and he later served on the Halifax station in HMS Penelope and from 1790-1795 he served on a number of ships in the Channel.
From 1796 to 1799 he served on HMS Raisonnable in the Channel and at the Cape of Good Hope, and from December 1799 to October 1802 in HMS Immortalite off the coast of France.
Pasco was appointed to HMS Victory in April 1803, and in May served in the Mediterranean under Nelson, where he contributed to the capture of the French frigate Embuscade.

She was hit by a torpedo from UB 29, which destroyed her rudder and steering gear, but she was still able to maintain 20kts, and reached home in safety.
In June 1917 Penelope was one of the ships involved in the bombardment of the German base at Ostend.
