Some 200 knights were killed or captured, but the English army chose to retire with their captives, rather than tackle the French infantry which had taken no significant part in the fighting.
HMS Ajax, which had served with distinction the previous year at the River Plate against the German "pocket battleship" Graf Spee, encountered three Italian destroyers in a night action in the Mediterranean.
She sank Airone and Ariel, and badly damaged Artigliere, which was finished off by HMS York on 12 October.

That night HMS Illustrious launches two waves of Swordfish, some of which belong to HMS Eagle.

Built 1943 as a wartime type "Liberty" ship by Oregon Shipbuilding Co, Portland, Oregon, she was launched as the CHARLES A., but completed for the British Ministry of War Transport as the SAMTHAR.
Sold to Messageries Maritimes, Marseilles on 8th Dec.1936 and renamed SONTAY, she was managed by the Union Castle Mail SS Co from 1940-1945 and then returned to her owners.
She was a 17,029 gross ton vessel, length 576ft x beam 74ft, one funnel, two masts, twin screw and a speed of 17.5 knots.

I am the daughter of robert tyldesley who served on the castle tintagle f399 unfortunatley my dad died august 3rd 2005 i found all his ships log papers and decided to find out more about my dads ship i found your site most imformative and intertesting and will be logging on again in the future.
I joined HMS Morpeth Castle as an Able Seaman 1994 and left her after the war ended as a Petty Officer.

She had a displacement of 3726 1 CONC tons and 121 guns and was one of the largest ships in the Navy.
The pace of change is such that it 1 CONC is hard to realise that the flag ship The Royal Albert and the brig 1 CONC Harlequin were warships of the world's greatest Navy, only 137 years ago.

Grand Avenue, Hove was the Quarterdeck, complete with flagpole, of HMS King Alfred, a shore base that also consisted of Hove Swimming Baths.
There were free dancing lessons for members of HM forces in uniform, so I used to go along in my Home Guard kit.
