Pinafore was pirated so much in the United States that Gilbert and Sullivan made a special effort to claim American copyright early on their next work, The Pirates of Penzance.
Given the operetta's mockery of the "Queen's Navee" and the aristocracy in general, it is perhaps unsurprising that its reception among the nobility was cool.
It is noontime and the sailors are on the quarterdeck, "cleaning brasswork, splicing rope, etc." Little Buttercup, a Portsmouth "bumboat woman" (dockside vendor) so-named because she is the "rosiest, roundest, and reddest beauty in all Spithead", comes on board to sell her wares.

Such is the romantic lesson of HMS Pinafore, the enduring operetta by Topsy-Turvy collaborators W. Gilbert and Sir Arthur Sullivan.
Its hero, Ralph Rackstraw, is a seaman of humble origin serving aboard the title vessel, yet he refuses to be outclassed, as it were, in his pursuit of the fair Josephine, daughter to the ship's commanding officer and thus a maiden "much above his station." Love conquers all; class dismissed.
The bits are executed with such deftness that they never have a chance to drag down the comedy; the number bobs along on the words and music.

My friend Tom and I had never seen a Gilbert & Sullivan production before, so we decided to go see the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin's HMS Pinafore.
I don't think anything can really prepare you for one of these shows - all I had seen before were countless parodies of the various songs (including Stewie singing the the best HMS song on Family Guy), but the reality is that the actual show is so bizarre that it's exactly like the parody!
HMS Pinafore tells the simple story of a lowly sailor who's in love with the captain's daughter, but their love isn't "proper" because they are in different social classes.
