HMS Plym (K271), was a River-class anti-submarine frigate built for the Royal Navy at Smiths Dock, Middlesbrough, England.
She was launched on February 4 1943, and commissioned on May 16, 1943.
She was deliberately destroyed when the first British nuclear weapon, a 25 kiloton bomb, was detonated inside her hull on October 3, 1952 whilst she was anchored in 12 metres of water around 400 metres from the island of Trimouille in the Monte Bello Islands, Australia.

Portchester Civic Society has contributed over 200 images to the project and one of these, of a class in Castle Street School in the 1920’s, is their photograph of the month for September 2004 on the project’s website.
In 1945 the Portchester Castle was in Freetown, Sierra Leone when she was called upon to assist in the sinking of the liner Edinburgh Castle, built in 1910, which had been used in the port as an accommodation ship for naval personnel and survivors of sunken vessels.
HMS Portchester Castle continued serving with the 2nd Training Squadron until June 1956 when she was relieved by the Type 14 frigate HMS Keppel.

 HISTORY OF HARDWAY SAILING CLUB
In October 1943 lorries began tipping brick rubble from the Bomb Sites of Portsmouth over the sea wall at the end of Priory Road; by April 1944 a pier had been added and the Hardway D-Day invasion ramp was ready for use.
For example, Portchester Sailing Club was given a castle, the Locks Sailing Club a set of lock gates and Hardway a Crown.
This was a large old fashioned gas fire that came from a doctors surgery, it was given the nickname because as much gas escaped from it round the sides as was used for heating.

I am the daughter of robert tyldesley who served on the castle tintagle f399 unfortunatley my dad died august 3rd 2005 i found all his ships log papers and decided to find out more about my dads ship i found your site most imformative and intertesting and will be logging on again in the future.
I joined HMS Morpeth Castle as an Able Seaman 1994 and left her after the war ended as a Petty Officer.

Early in 64 we had some short lived excitement during the chopper assault from HMS Centaur in Tanzania and later that year we lost a mate, "Scouse" Wilson to sniper fire in the Wadi Taime during the Radfan campaign.
We were repatriated to 41 at Bickleigh and during 65 we did the Royal Tournament cliff assault display which introduced us to the rock ape branch and we later did a snow warfare course together in Norway.
Fred joined the Corps as a HO in 1943 and served with 458 Landing Craft Flottilla, (HMS Eastway), during the Normandy Landings.
