The Harvard Crimson :: News :: Harvard Medical School Scientists Make Groundbreaking Advances in Stroke Research
The finding was announced at a press conference held in Philadelphia by the American Heart Association on September 16 in conjunction with a similar study released by the University of South Carolina that determined that gene therapy could help reduce the risk of strokes in laboratory rats.
HMS investigators analyzed 696 participants from the Physicians Health Study--a study of 22,000 health professionals conducted at the Brigham and Women's Hospital since 1982-half of whom had experienced strokes.
The HMS investigators used a person's age and whether or not he or she smoked as categories to compare the 348 individuals who experienced strokes with the 348 who had not.

Health Management Systems, Inc. Case 97 Civ. 1865 (HB) - OPINION AND ORDER
On February 27, 1996, the beginning of the Class Period, HMS announced its first quarter results in a press release, stating that they had a "solid quarter" and looked "forward to a fulfilling year ahead." Plaintiffs allege that these statements were false and misleading in light of HMS's problems with HHL and its other customers.
When HMS announced its third quarter results on September 4, 1996 and released its 10-Q report for the period ended July 31, 1996, plaintiffs contend that HMS reinforced this false notion that the HHL situation was behind HMS.
HMS reported that these poor results were a result of problems with large clients, as well as the fact that the restructuring of HMS's relationship with HHL had consumed more management resources than anticipated.

The sharp drop is due to a new DNA sequencing technology developed by Harvard Medical School (HMS) researchers Jay Shendure, Gregory Porreca, George Church, and their colleagues, reported on August 4 in the online edition of Science.
In their study, the researchers matched the sequence information against a reference genome, finding genetic variation in the bacterial DNA that had evolved in the lab.
"These developments give the feeling that improvements are coming very quickly," said HMS professor of genetics Church, who also heads the Lipper Center for Computational Genetics, MIT-Harvard DOE Genomes to Life Center, and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Center for Excellence in Genomic Science.
