On the afternoon of Saturday the eighth of June, 1940, the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious and her escorting destroyers HMS Acasta and HMS Ardent were intercepted in the Norwegian Sea by the German battlecruisers Gneisenau and Scharnhorst.
The WW I destroyer HMS Ardent was Sunk by gunfire from the German Battle Fleet during the Battle of Jutland on the 1st June 1916 with a loss of 78 lives.
The Torpedo Boat HMS Ardent was attached to the Mediterranean Fleet during the 1890s as tender to the flagship HMS Ramillies, with the idea of being used among other things, for the training of as many as possible of the stokers of the Fleet in the management of water tube boilers.

HMS Ramillies (pennant number 07) was a Revenge-class battleship of the Royal Navy, named after the Battle of Ramillies.
Ramillies was detached at Aden and formed Force J along with the battleship HMS Malaya, and the aircraft carrier HMS Glorious.
Ramillies was a part of a British fleet put together hurriedly in March of 1942 under Admiral James Somerville in an attempt to prevent Japanese naval forces from cutting the sea lanes to India.

The name Ramillies has existed in the Royal Navy for 238 years, having first been given to a warship built in 1702 as the Royal Katherine, but renamed in 1706 in commemoration of the victory won by John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough, in that year (Ramillies being a village in Belgium).
In 1794 she was present at Lord Howe’s famous victory of "The Glorious First of June", and in 1799 served during the blockade of the fleet at Rochefort.
Five years later she assisted H.M.S. London to capture the French ship Marengo, while in 1813, when lying off New London, the Americans attempted to destroy her with a primitive torpedo; she was scrapped in 1850.

Her sister ships were HMS ROYAL SOVEREIGN, HMS REVENGE, HMS RESOLUTION and the ill-fated HMS ROYAL OAK (Torpedoed and Sunk, Scapa Flow 14th October 1939 with the loss of 800 lives).
