HMS Repulse was built at Clydebank by John Brown, and launched on January 8, 1916, too late to take part in Battle of Jutland and to early to incorporate lessons learned during that battle.
She was detached from the main force prior to the final engagement due to fears of a repeat of the loss of HMS Hood and the lack of fuel.
During the battle, HMS Repulse was able to avoid 14 torpedoes but then, in the span of 20 minutes, she was hit by 5 torpedoes and 1 bomb.

HMS Repulse and her sister ship Renown had additional armour platting fitted especially over the crowns of the Magazines, Steering Room and over the Engine Room.
Repulse joined the eastern Fleet in October 1941, arriving at Singapore on the 2nd of December, she sailed with HMS Prince of Wales and four destroyers to attack Japanese naval forces in their landing areas around Malaya.
On the 10th December both the repulse and Prince of Wales were attacked by 80 Japanese aircraft and were sunk, HMS Repulse being hit by a Torpedo and sunk at 1233 hours, after being hit by a further 4 hits.

The second HMS Hood was a Royal Sovereign class battleship built at Chatham, England and commissioned in 1891.

Completed in August 1916, she joined the Grand Fleet following post-trials modifications and operated in the North Sea for the remainder of World War I. The light protection of this class of two battlecruisers was a considerable cause for concern and, soon after the Armistice, Repulse received an extensive refit.

In 1917, REPULSE was the first capital ship to receive a flying-off platform, and trials in the autumn of 1917 proved generally successful.
Armor continued to be a concern; in July, 1918, REPULSE was taken to Portsmouth for refit, where she received the 9" armored belt which had been removed from the ex-Chilean battleship ADMIRAL COCHRANE (which was being converted into the aircraft carrier EAGLE).
On 10 December 1941, REPULSE was sunk by Japanese dive and torpedo bombers (five torpedo hits) off Malaya; 796 of her crew were rescued by accompanying destroyers.

Despite frantic maneuvering she was enveloped by bomb splashes; this was followed by a tremendous explosion, which reverberated throughout the ship - a 250 kg bomb, tore through the upper deck before detonating near a fan chamber.
HMS Prince of Wales increased speed to 25 knots, as her small arms opened up once more; the noise was deafening, reaching a crescendo as the planes flew within feet of the guard-rails.
Repulse was unable to maneuver her way clear of this triple attack.

HMS Renown, lead ship of a class of two 26,500-ton battlecruisers, was built at Glasgow, Scotland.
Completed in September 1916, she served with the Grand Fleet in the North Sea during the remaining two years of World War I. In 1920-21, following a refit, she carried the Prince of Wales on a voyage to Australia and America.
HMS Renown had brief post-war service in British waters and was sold for scrapping in March 1948.

HMS PRINCE OF WALES had a short but eventful career, She was built by Cammell Laird in the midlands, and was designed to the constraints of the London Treaty.
HMS PRINCE OF WALES was repaired and subsequently went on to transport British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to Ship Harbor, Placenta Bay, Newfoundland for the meeting with the American President Roosevelt for the Atlantic Treaty Conference, August 1941.

HMS Renown was laid down in 1915 and launched 1916.
I decided my model of HMS RENOWN would portray the ship as she would have appeared in the middle part of 1942 while sporting the wonderful camouflage scheme that is shown in the colour rendition of the scheme in port and starboard elevations in the instructions.
I am tempted to someday build her again in either immediate pre-war or a late-war configuration in a more plain colour scheme, as I feel that much of the elegant lines and detail of the original ship and of this model kit are lost and disguised by, and within, the multicoloured paintwork.
