Three months before the start of world war two he was called up and served on hms dauntless before being released in 1941.
In 1927 he was seconded to hms Renown for duty on the royal barge.
Hms Renown was used for royal tours at the time.

HMS Princess Royal although offered to Chile for sale was reduced to reserve and sold for scrap in December 1922.

Revenge was general messing which meant that we peeled the spuds but apart from that everything was done in the galley.
I served in HMS Revenge as a torpedoman for over two and a half years from early 1941 to Sept 1943 when she paid off in Southampton.
My dad served on HMS Revenge 1940 to 1941 and was aboard (and survived) HMS Dorsetshire when she went down in the Indian Ocean on April 5th 1942.

 HMS Revenge 1892
HMS Revenge, Royal Navy Pre-Dreadnought steel armoured battleship of the Royal Sovereign Class, built by Palmers and launched 3rd November 1892 as part of the Naval Defence Act Programme of 1890.
The Revenge was commissioned at Portsmouth in January 1896 to fly the flag of Rear-Admiral A T Dale, commanding the Special Flying Squadron.
Second in command on the Revenge is Commander Reginald B Colmore, and next after him for navigating duties is borne by Commander Michael S Beatty (both officers are seen to the right of the Captain, and are distinguished by the three rings of lace on their coat sleeves).

In common with other Revenge class battleships, Ramillies suffered from having her secondary armament, the 6 in (152 mm) guns, located too low, on the main deck, with the result that in heavy weather they were liable to be awash.

Launched in January 1915, the Revenge-class battleship HMS Resolution was to enjoy a 33 year career during which she served in the Atlantic, home and Eastern Fleets as well as serving repeated spells in the Mediterranean, being both bombed and torpedoed along the way.

During the evacuation of Crete in 1941, HMS Barham was damaged on the 27th May when she was attacked by fifteen enemy aircraft which appeared from the direction of the sun.
By a fortunate chance taken in Liverpool in 1940, I was the means of introducing the first plasma service in an H.M. ship in the Mediterranean, and ours was the first ship to use the stuff in casualties immediately after action.

H.M.S. Warspite arrived in America to have repairs carried out and many of her crew transferred to Resolution, They Sailed to Plymouth where She continued her refit in dry dock at Devonport under a camouflage net, this included extra deck armour and new radar system.
H.M.S. Resolution was reduced to reserve status, at Southampton and used as a training ship for new ratings.Transfered to Devonport in June 1944 and used as training for stokers, her main armament was removed to provide spares for H.M.S. Ramillies and Warspite who were involved in operation Neptune (Navy cover of D-day).
Gunbody No 102 was the original gun fitted in 1915 and replaced in 1938, it was stored at the Vickers factory until 1944 when it was placed on the monitor ship H.M.S. Roberts and bombarded German Batteries on Sword Beach on D-Day.
