With the Restoration she was renamed HMS Royal Charles, and served as the ship that brought king Charles II back to England in 1660, captained by Sir Edward Montagu.
As Royal Charles she took part in the Second Anglo-Dutch War.
In 1667 flagging English national esteem was further depressed by the raid on the Medway in which a Dutch fleet invaded the Thames and Medway rivers and captured Royal Charles, removing her with great skill to Hellevoetsluis in the United Provinces.

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was born in Shrewsbury, England.
Charles was the grandson of two very prominent men of the time, Erasmus Darwin (1731-1802) and Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795).
It was the research Charles Darwin did while aboard the HMS Beagle that formed the basis for his classic work, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life (Origin of Species), published in 1859.

At the time of the Pearl Harbor attack, HMS Peterel was the last commissioned Royal Navy vessel on the Yangtze (moored at Shanghai) and had been stripped of most weapons.
HMS Peterel was hopelessly out gunned, but returned machine gun fire on the opposing force killing a number of Japanese.
The Japanese proceeded to machine gun the Royal Navy sailors in the water and it was only due to Chinese rescuers in row boats, who also came under fire, that the majority of the crew survived.

HMS Beagle was a Cherokee class 10-gun brig of the Royal Navy, named after the beagle, a breed of dog.
She was launched on 11 May 1820 from the Woolwich Dockyard on the River Thames, at a cost of £7,803.
On the second survey voyage the young naturalist Charles Darwin was on board, and his work would eventually make the Beagle one of the most famous ships in history.

The first Royal Oak was a 76-gun second-rate launched in 1664 and burnt by the Dutch in 1667 in the Raid on the Medway.
The next Royal Oak was a Revenge-class battleship launched in 1914 and sunk at anchor on October 14, 1939, in Scapa Flow.

HMS Royal Sovereign, launched 26th February 1891, she served in both the Home and Channel Fleets but after 1900 she served in home waters and finally scrapped 7th October 1913.
When Royal Sovereign was engaged in action the captain would control operations form the fore conning tower, (under the fore bridge) The armour was 14 inches thick with all round view given by slits in the armour.
Prior going to the Mediterranean the “Royal Sovereign” was flag-ship of the channel squadron, and she is a ship of special interest, for her building was a record for rapidity, and she was the first to be completed of the ten battle-ships that formed the main feature of the Naval Defence Act of 1889.

The photograph shows the entire crew of the Royal Oak positioned in a huge semi circle underneath one of her guns, the camera is clockwork operated and take one continual shot from one side to the other that results in a flat end result.
It was taken at HMS Cunningham, a training establishment at Douglas, in the Isle of Man. Previously a holiday camp (Cunningham's camp) taken over by the RN during the war.
My brother was a Royal Marine Bugler, he was one of two aboard the HMS Royal Oak when it went down, the other Bugler's name was Priestley A J they were both 16 years of age when they died.

Two ships of the British Royal Navy have been named HMS Royal Charles, both after King Charles II.
The first Royal Charles was an 80-gun ship of the line, launched as Naseby in 1655, renamed in 1660, and captured by the Dutch at Chatham in 1667.
The second Royal Charles was a 100-gun ship of the line, launched in 1673, renamed Queen in 1693, rebuilt in 1715 and renamed Royal George, again rebuilt in 1756, renamed Royal Anne this time, and broken up in 1767.
