Royal Sovereign, launched in 1891, was the name ship of her class of eight 15,000-ton pre-Dreadnought battleships built under the Naval Defence Act 1889.
Royal Sovereign, launched in May 1915, was a Revenge-class battleship.

Three shots were fired at close range against the after turret of Royal Sovereign from one of the 9-inch guns carried by HMS Bellerophon.
She was thereafter attached to the naval gunnery school HMS Excellent as gunnery ship until 1873, when she was replaced by HMS Glatton and demoted to 4th class reserve.

Following the collapse of the French naval challenge in the 1860s after the construction of HMS Warrior and a new fleet of British ironclads, there was little public concern over the strength of the Royal Navy for another twenty years.
The seven Royal Sovereign first-class battleships, which became the template for capital ships until the revolutionary HMS Dreadnought in 1906, embodied this new policy.
When the 14,150-ton Royal Sovereign was completed in 1892, she was the largest warship in the world.

HMS Royal Sovereign, launched 26th February 1891, she served in both the Home and Channel Fleets but after 1900 she served in home waters and finally scrapped 7th October 1913.
When Royal Sovereign was engaged in action the captain would control operations form the fore conning tower, (under the fore bridge) The armour was 14 inches thick with all round view given by slits in the armour.
Prior going to the Mediterranean the “Royal Sovereign” was flag-ship of the channel squadron, and she is a ship of special interest, for her building was a record for rapidity, and she was the first to be completed of the ten battle-ships that formed the main feature of the Naval Defence Act of 1889.

The Royal Navy continued to provide blue water defence in the Pacific until World War Two, when expansion of the RAN saw the acquisition of aircraft carriers, and other large surface vessels.
By the mid-late 1960s, the RAN was at the zenith of its operational capabilities; it was capable of despatching a full carrier battle group in support of major operations by having in service an aircraft carrier, three large area defence destroyers of the Perth class, six modern "River" class frigates and four Oberon class submarines.
To compensate for the delay, HMS Vengeance was loaned to the RAN and served from 1952 to 1955, when the new carrier was finally completed.

The outcome of the campaign was that British Government agreed to restore and preserve her to commemorate Nelson, the Battle of Trafalgar and the Royal Navy's supremacy during and after the Napoleonic period.
HMS Victory is still in commission as the flagship of the admiral for the time being acting as Second Sea Lord in his role as Commander in Chief of the Royal Navy's Home Command (CINCNAVHOME).

HMS Nelson saw service in he Mediterranean up to 1943, she again saw service off Normandy where she was again mined on 18th June 1944.
HMS Prince of Wales, was built by Cammell Laird and launched on the 3rd May 1939.

With the Royal Navy firing at a superior rate to that of the French and Spanish the battle was soon decided.
Nelson duly died aboard the HMS Victory some three hours after receiving the fatal shot, his death marring the celebrations of what was a really great victory for the British.

My first assumption was that these names had been chosen by some fresh faced innocent unaware of their connotations, but a careful reading of the index suggested that the choice of such names was deliberate and malicious.
But it is hard not to imagine the crew of HMS Narcissus leaning over the side to admire their reflections in the water, or the crew of HMS Spanker being accosted by leather-clad masochists in dockside bars.

In the background, HMS Neptune is emerging through the gunsmoke and is about to pass the wreck of the French flagship Bucentaure which Victory so spectacularly routed as she passed through the allied line.
HMS Temeraire, which followed Victory through, and which was also to become embroiled on the Redoutables fight, is obscured by the smoke beyond the British flagship.

A Reuter telegram from Athens of yesterday's date, states that intelligence has been received there that a big gun burst on board the battleship "Royal Sovereign" as she was manoeuvring outside the harbour of Astakos on Saturday.
Captain Spurway R.M.A. and 5 men were killed and 19 injured by the explosion aboard the "Royal Sovereign", which was due to the premature ignition of a cartridge in a six-inch gun before the breech had been closed.
The ignition is believed to have been caused by a fragment of smouldering cartridge left in the gun after the firing of the previous round.
