Sceptre was employed in the Channel watching the enemy in Brest and the Basque Roads[?] until January 1813.
The fourth HMS Sceptre (1943)[?] was a 1940-programme British S-class submarine[?] (not to be confused with the earlier United States S-class submarines[?]) launched on January 9, 1943, in Greenock[?], although her keel had been laid down in July 1940.
In August 1995 Sceptre was forced to abort her patrol and return to Faslane[?] after suffering, in the words of the Ministry of Defense, "an unspecified fault in the propulsion system." A defect in Sceptres reactor was discovered in 1998, though its seriousness was not appreciated until after the investigation of another serious accident.

HMS Vanguard is being fitted with a new design of nuclear reactor core at the Devonport dockyards in Plymouth.
In 1995, HMS Sceptre returned suddenly to Faslane from sea with problems that at the time were reported as a radiation leak.
HMS Spartan arrived at Rosyth in January 1999 for a refit that would start in March 1999 but was not due to be completed until April 2003 - twice as long as the two years nuclear submarine refits normally take.

HMS Tireless is in Gibraltar and plans to repair its reactor there have been opposed both by many people in Gibraltar but also in Andalusia.
HMS Triumph - In June 2000 it was reported in Plymouth that this was the only operational Trafalgar Class submarine, armed with cruise missiles.

HMS Dreadnought was a fully operational attack submarine and served for 20 years from 1963 before being decommissioned in 1983 and placed in store.

HMS Sceptre arrived in Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain, on Thursday.
Mr Moratinos told Spanish television the visit could not be compared to the almost year-long stay by HMS Tireless, when there were fears the damage could cause a leak and contaminate the environment.
A UK Ministry of Defence spokesman said HMS Sceptre had been scheduled to stop in Gibraltar and was taking the opportunity to carry out repairs on its water cooling system in the diesel room.

On the 12th August 1986, Commander M.E. White, Royal Navy, approved the Branch's requiest to be affiliated to the Swiftsure-Class Submarine HMS Sceptre.
Over the years we have had some memorable times on board the Sceptre and have attended a re-commissioning at Devonport and a re-dedication at Rosyth.
HMS Sceptre is also affiliated to the town of Wigan and when the Wigan Branch of the R.N.A. was formed in the mid 90's they also became affiliated to the vessel.

After many years of happy association with the Company HMS Spartan was recently decommissioned, and the Company has now adopted her ‘Swiftsure’ class sistership HMS Sceptre.  She is a 4,512 tonnes nuclear powered attack submarine based at Faslane with a complement of 132.
The current HMS Sceptre is the sixth Naval vessel to carry the name and the second submarine to do so.
Although the present HMS Sceptre is one of only two remaining Swiftsure class boats in service with the Royal Navy she is expected to remain in service for many years having recently completed a six year refit.

My first assumption was that these names had been chosen by some fresh faced innocent unaware of their connotations, but a careful reading of the index suggested that the choice of such names was deliberate and malicious.
But it is hard not to imagine the crew of HMS Narcissus leaning over the side to admire their reflections in the water, or the crew of HMS Spanker being accosted by leather-clad masochists in dockside bars.

This should permit HMS Sceptre's reactor to be powered up and tested prior to the submarine going to sea for the usual post refit trials and training before she returns to operations.
