HMS Scorpion, a 2750-ton ironclad turret ship built at Birkenhead, England, was one of two sisters secretly ordered from the Laird shipyard by the Confederate States of America government in 1862.
Commissioned in July 1865, Scorpion was assigned to the Channel Fleet until 1869, with time out for a refit that reduced her sailing rig from a bark to a schooner.
The former HMS Scorpion was lost at sea while under tow to the United States, where she was to be scrapped.

HMS Wivern, a 2750-ton ironclad turret ship built at Birkenhead, England, was one of two sisters secretly ordered from the Laird shipyard by the Confederate States of America government in 1862.
She remained in Hong Kong until sold for scrap in 1922, having been reduced to harbor duties from 1904.
One of Wivern's commanding officers was Captain Hugh Talbot Burgoyne, VC who was later appointed the commanding officer of HMS Captain.

Intended to become CSS Mississippi and CSS North Carolina, they were seized by the British government in 1863, purchased in 1864 and completed in October 1865 as HMS Wivern and HMS Scorpion.

But, by the time he wrote to Mallory on 23rd January 1863, he was disturbed by the fact that rumours of the ironclads were being widely distributed, both in the Confederacy and in England, and he feared the British Government was about to change the rules respecting "his" rams.
Bulloch received a despatch from Mallory on 9th March 1863, suggesting that France might be more tolerant, and even help to rescue the rams, with a possibility of building other vessels in France.
In early September of 1863, Adams wrote an almost warlike letter to Lord Russell, and, on September 8th, Russell issued instructions for the seizure of the "Laird Rams." Lord Russell`s private papers indicate that he took this decision some time earlier.

In March 1863, Slidell, Bulloch and Arman met at the Arman shipyard at Bordeaux.
Bulloch tried every way he knew to have the ownership of the vessels transferred to a French company like Arman The British Government however, got wind that the ships were meant for the confederate Navy and seized both of them.
Eventually both of them were incorporated into the British Navy as HMS Wyvern and HMS Scorpion.
