The next ship to bear the name HMS Scylla was also a cruiser built in 1890 and under the command of Captain Percy Scott was involved with experiments in signalling lights and ended with the fame of having the most efficient gunnery ship in the fleet.
On June 5 HMS Scylla took part in the D-Day Landings and it was at the Sword Beach that she took up position as the Flagship of Rear Admiral Sir Phillip Vian, Commander of Force ‘S’.
HMS Scylla ended up hitting a mine and was so badly damaged that she was towed back to Britain and used as a target ship and was finally broken up by Ward, Barrow, in 1950.

HMS Scylla was built in Scotland and launched in 1942.
Scylla was a bit of a one-off in that of the 12 ships of the Dido class, it was one of, I think, only two which were converted during construction to be an anti-aircraft ship rather than a conventional cruiser engaging surface stuff.
We in Scylla had, as yet, no scares but the escort-carrier Avenger which rendezvoused with the convoy off Iceland had had a torrrid journey north, having lost one plane overboard in rough weather and had her engines pack up owing to dirty fuel.

One of the last warships to be built at Plymouth, Scylla was laid down at Devonport Dockyard in 1967, and launched in August 1968.After her fitting out she was commissioned on 14 February 1970 and went on service in the Mediterranean where she assisted H.M.S. Penelope in underwater noise trials.
By the beginning of the nineties Scylla was obsolete, and in 1993 she was decommissioned and left to rust.
The Scylla is a welcome addition to Plymouth's sea bed, but it's a great shame that so much was taken from the Scylla, as its robbed her of most of her personality.

The trip out to the Scylla was about 25 mins, and we were all there holding onto the RIB, with the usual "team on a mission" look, which is just one of the things about RIB diving that I personally really enjoy.
Life on the Scylla was beginning to grab hold too, dead mens fingers clung to the outer surface, and shoals of fish seemed to wander in and out the rooms as if still trying to figure out the best spot to hang out on this new reef.

Contrary to popular belief, HMS Scylla is not, in fact, the first ship to be scuppered as an artificial reef in the UK.
The railings themselves are already covered with tiny hydroids, feeding in the current that gently washes over the wreck with the tides and keel worms have colonised much of the steel plating with a labyrinth of casts.
With gun mounts, depth charge racks and missile launchers still in place, Scylla is a fascinating wreck to dive and will, hopefully, become more interesting as the marine life moves in.

The ex Royal Naval Frigate, Scylla, recently purchased by a consortium headed by the National Marine Aquarium, will be sent to the seabed to produce Europe’s first artificial reef at approximately 1515, Saturday, 27th March 2004 in Whitsand Bay, near Plymouth, Cornwall.
HMS Scylla was decommissioned from the Royal Navy in 1993, being replaced by the highly advanced Type 23 Frigate, which offers a far superior and more potent weapons system.
After the Scylla has settled onto the seabed, the Royal Navy’s Dive Team will be the first to dive on to the new artificial reef to collect any hazards that may remain.

I was looking forward to this, as I was fortunate enough to see Scylla towed out of Plymouth on the 27th of March and after a morning dive on Hillsea point watch her being sunk.
I was disappointed that I didn’t see more of Scylla but at the same time plenty more to go back for.
Scylla was interesting but it just wasn’t bustling with life.
