The first Severn was a fourth-rate two-decked ship of 50 guns launched in 1695, rebuilt in in 1739, captured by the French in 1746, and recaptured by the Royal Navy in 1747 but not taken back into service.
The second Severn was a fourth-rate 50-gun two-decker launched in 1747 and sold in 1759.
The seventh Severn was a Humber-class monitor, originally built for Brazil but purchased in 1914 on the outbreak of World War I as a shore-bombardment ship.

HMS Kirkliston has a double mahogany hull on an aluminium frame and is powered by two Paxman Deltic 18A-7A diesel engines providing a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 2500 miles at 12 knots.
She was sunk by HMS Amphion near the mouth of the Thames on August the 5th 1914.
She was eventually destroyed on July the 11th 1915 by HMS Mersey and HMS Severn accompanied by aircraft, after being trapped in the Rufiji River opposite Mafia Island by HMS Chatham.

Her and her sister ship HMS Orlando were the longest wooden warships built for the Royal Navy at 336 feet overall was nearly twice the size of HMS Victory, the flagship of Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar.
They were relatively modern, in that they were the first cruisers that had discarded their sailing rigs in the design, that was synonymous with the old wooden warships, and were now solely steam powered warships.
In July 1915 she was towed to the Rufiji delta in German East Africa where she and HMS Severn then assisted in the destruction of the Kaiserliche Marine cruiser SMS Königsberg.

At the start of the War of the Austrian Succession in 1739, Commodore George Anson took command of a squadron that was given the task of harassing Spanish shipping on the coast of South America and capturing the Manila galleon, the annual shipment of gold and silver from Mexico to the Philippines.
His six ships were HMS Centurion, Severn (50 guns), Pearl (40), Wager (28), Tryal (8), and the supply ship Anna Pink.
Severn and Pearl turned back from the Horn.) By the time the surviving ships left Juan Fernández, they had lost a staggering 626 of the 961 crew they had sailed with; the remaining 335 men and boys were "a number, greatly insufficient for the manning of Centurion alone."

The present HMS Severn is the tenth ship to bear the name in the Royal Navy.
The next HMS Severn was one of the last frigates to be built as a sailing warship, eventually broken up in 1876 after only one active commission to the East Indies.
In the Mediterranean she conducted anti-shipping patrols, ‘cloak and dagger’ missions on enemy coasts and ran supplies to the besieged garrison of the Aegean island of Leros.

HMS Severn was launched by shipbuilder Vosper Thornycroft (VT) in Southampton on 4th December and is the second of three new Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs) that are being leased to the Royal Navy.
The first of the class, HMS Tyne, was launched on 05 June 02 and will be handed over to the Navy shortly.
HMS Severn is due for acceptance next spring, while HMS Mersey will be handed over in Autumn 2003.

New River-class offshore patrol vessel (OPV) HMS Severn has been launched by Vosper Thornycroft at their shipyard in Woolston, Southampton.
The second of a class of three – HMS Tyne was launched earlier this year - HMS Severn has been built by VT and, like her sisters, will be leased to the Royal Navy in a overall contract worth £60 million.
Severn will be accepted in the first half of next year, while HMS Mersey is expected to follow in the autumn.

Prior to the Allied landings in Italy in September, HMS/M Severn had been involved in "cloak & dagger" operations such as the landing of commandoes on the island of Sardinia where they were to destroy the torpedo bomber base at Cagliari (but that's another story).
Six Bofors guns were loaded onboard Severn in Beirut harbour and together with 3,000 rounds of ammunition, stowed in the fore-ends via the torpedo loading hatch.
The pneumatic tyred "gun carriages" or mountings were secured on top of the casing by means of steel wire.

HMS Tyne will be the first to be commissioned and will be undergoing sea trials in October 2002.

HMS PIONEER was commissioned by the Royal Navy on 10 July 1900.
With several attempts to drive KONIGSBERG from her lair having failed, it was decided to tow to the scene two monitors, HMS SEVERN and HMS MERSEY, and taking advantage of their shallow draught, take them upstream within range of the enemy.
This time KONIGSBERG straddled the SEVERN as she prepared to drop anchor, but SEVERN quickly got the range and hit the German several times, setting her on fire and forcing the enemy to complete demolition after removal of the guns.

HMS Mersey, the final vessel in the class, was launched in Southampton earlier this month and will be handed over by VT later this year.
