A worldwide sea voyage aboard the HMS Beagle and observations on the Galapagos Islands in particular provided inspiration and much of the data on which he based his theory.
After Darwin finished his studies, Henslow recommended him for the position of naturalist and gentleman's companion to Robert Fitzroy, the captain of the HMS Beagle, which was departing on a five-year expedition to chart the coastline of South America.
A large meeting was organised in Oxford where 'Soapy Sam' Wilberforce, the Bishop of Oxford, numerous Clergy and Robert Fitzroy (the Captain of HMS Beagle) argued against Darwin, Thomas Huxley and their Evolutionist supporters.

It is situated on a low peninsula northeast of the entrance to its harbour, Port Darwin, a deep inlet of Clarence Strait of the Timor Sea.
The harbour was found in 1839 by John Stokes, surveyor aboard the ship HMS Beagle, and it was named after the British naturalist Charles Darwin.
Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection after exploring plants and animals during his voyage on the HMS Beagle.
