HMS Shropshire (83) was a County class heavy cruiser laid down by William Beardmore and Company, Limited, at Dalmuir in Scotland on 24 February 1926, launched on 5 July 1928 by the Countess of Powis, Baroness D?Arcy de Knayth and completed on 12 September 1929.
Shropshire served with the Mediterranean Fleet until September 1939, operated in the South Atlantic on trade protection duties, and participated in the campaign against Italian Somaliland.
Shropshire was transferred to Australia as a replacement following the loss of the heavy cruiser Canberra in the battle of Savo Island on 9 August 1942 and commissioned into the Royal Australian Navy as HMAS Shropshire at Chatham on 20 April 1943.

Built in 1815, HMS Wellesley was literally demolished dockside by a 500 pound bomb during a night time German air raid on Portsmouth naval base, March 10-11, 1941, thus gaining the distinction of being the last wooden ship of the line to be sunk by enemy action.
HMS Victory suffered some damage to 120 square foot of her hull when a 500 pound bomb fell and detonated between the wall of her dry dock, her hull, and the cradle she rests upon.

Included in the article is a photograph of what is claimed to be Shropshire which was apparently bought in Plymouth in 1943.
