HMS Solebay (D70) was a Battle-class destroyer of the Royal Navy (RN).
Solebay was intended to join the 19th Destroyer Flotilla of the British Pacific Fleet, but the war against Japan ended while Solebay was working up in the Mediterranean, and so she returned to Home Waters.
Solebay was positioned in the middle of her sister-ships Cadiz and Corunna.

Solebay was built by R. Hawthorn, Leslie & Company Limited; on the Tyne.
While there, Solebay acted as escort for HMY Britannia, carrying HM the Queen, accompanied by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh, who were visiting Italy on a state visit.
Solebay subsequently joined the Home Fleet, and once more joined up with HMY Britannia and HM the Queebn, when Solebay became escort during the Queen's visit to West Africa.

Hoisting his flag on HMS Ramillies, Byng was surprised to find that nine of his thirteen ships were desperately short of men but the Admiralty refused to allow him to enlist men from the other ships in the harbour.
Some of the ships, such as HMS Intrepid and HMS Captain were old and leaky and when Byng had received the instructions from the Admiralty on April 1, he found them to be rather vague.
Byng was moved from confinement on HMS Antelope to HMS Royal Anne in Portsmouth Harbour and then on to the Royal Hospital at Greenwich.

He is drafted to the fourth rate 60 gun ship HMS Eagle where he is soon promoted to master's mate and sees action in the Channel under Captain Hugh Palliser, later to become member of parliament for Scarborough and Cook's lifelong friend.
Cook, now a master, is drafted to HMS Pembroke, part of the squadron under Admiral Boscowen which is sent to Halifax, Nova Scotia in the April of 1758.
The Whitby built HMS Resolution is Cook's chosen vessel for his second voyage of discovery on which he is accompanied by the adventure, also Whitby built.

The main armament was to be fitted in enclosed mountings, despite objections from some quarters that the aperture required for the barrels to have an 80o elevation would expose the mechanism to water damage in heavy seas, and that enclosing the mounting would make the guns crew blind.
SOLEBAY was launched at Hawthorn Leslie on 22 February 1944.
She was also selected as senior escort to the Royal Yacht for H.M. The Queen’s state visit to Italy, which included a visit to Venice (the first of two made by SOLEBAY) culminating in a spectacular fire-work display.

Hms Cavalier (D73) recently won a race against Hms Rapid and so claims the title of the fastest major war ship in the Fleet.

It became officially known as H.M.S. Ganges in 1927 and it remained so until 1976.
I knew very little about H.M.S. Ganges at the time I entered but I soon discovered Ganges was still being run as if time had stood still for 100 years.

When Cook was on HMS Eagle he came to Trinity House in Water Lane near Tower Bridge to sit his Master's examination.
Cook was then assigned to HMS Solebay, a 24 gun frigate commanded by Captain Robert Craig and currently in harbour at Leith near Edinburgh in Scotland.
HMS Solebay sailed from Leith on August 2nd on a patrol up the Scottish East Coast to Orkney and Shetland.

HMS Trincomalee is a Leda Class Frigate built for the British Admiralty in Bombay.
She saw active service in the North Atlantic and West Indies Station as well as in the Pacific Squadron based on Vancouver, which included naval operations in support of the Crimean War, before being paid off in Chatham in 1857.
In 1932 she joined the Trafalgar veteran HMS IMPLACABLE in Portsmouth under the auspices of the Society for Naval Research where her training role continued, including her use by the Admiralty during World War II for the training of "hostilities only" ratings, until 1987, latterly under the control of the Foudroyant Trust.

H.M.S. "Garland", under the command of Lieutenant Fegen, with other destroyers, were proceeding to the spot to render assistance, when it was seen that one boat which had been lowered from the "O.B. Jennings" had been swamped.

This is the Tri-ang Minic Ships model of HMS Alamein one of the Royal Navy's "Battle" Class destroyers all of which were named after famous historical battles.
Tri-ang Minic produced identical models of the two Group 2 "Battle" Class destroyers HMS Alamein and HMS Jutland which were distinguished only by the model number and name marked on the underside.
