HMS Scott’s tasking is a non-military role that will provide bathymetric (measuring the depth of water) and geological assessment of the Asian earthquake epicentre and extended fracture zone.
While HMS Scott is not directly involved in the humanitarian relief effort, her survey work in the vicinity of the epicentre is of significance to the scientific community in furthering the understanding of the tsunami.
HMS Scott deployed from the UK in November 2004 in order to undertake a programme of work in the North Atlantic, Arabian Sea and Indian Ocean and is scheduled to return to the UK in June 2005.

HMS Cavalier assisted in rounding up the convoy and ensuring their safe passage to the Clyde, with the loss of only 3 out of the 34 ships.
Back on home territory, HMS Cavalier was on exercises in the Bristol channel during the summer of 1970 when she intercepted an SOS call from a coaster that had caught fire and subsequently been abandoned by its crew.
She was rescued from the breakers and moved to Southampton as a museum ship, a venture that unfortunately failed, as did a later move to Newcastle on Tyne to fulfil the same role.

HMS Warrior also had a figurehead on the end of her bow, and along with her sister ship, HMS Black Prince and the HMS Rodney of 1888, was one of the last of the British front-rank ships to carry a figurehead.
HMS Warrior is now the only surviving iron warship in the world, and is on display in Portsmouth.

The Type 42 warship left Portsmouth at the end of the summer on Exercise Argonaut 2001, and was due to return to the UK after her participation in Exercise Saif Sareea off the coast of Oman.
Southampton also saved the lives of 23 refugees who were drifting at sea with no food or water.

The world's first battlecruiser, HMS Invincible was sunk with all but six her crew of 1,032 shortly before the two main battle fleets briefly collided.

The destroyer – which vies with HMS St Albans for the right to use the nickname ‘the Saint’ – was built at the old Woolston yard by Vosper Thornycroft two decades ago; the firm has since moved its shipbuilding operations to Portsmouth.
