HMS Sovereign of the Seas - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Sovereign of the Seas was a 17th century British Royal Navy first-rate ship of the line of 100 guns, later known as just Sovereign and then Royal Sovereign.
Referred to as "The Golden Devil" (den Gulden Duvel) by the Dutch, Sovereign served throughout the wars of the Commonwealth of England and became the flagship of Admiral Robert Blake.
Sovereign became leaky and defective with age during the reign of William III, and was laid up at Chatham, ignominiously ending her days by being burnt to the water line as a result of having been set on fire either by accident, negligence or design.

Built at a cost of £65,586, about ten 40-gun ships could have been built for that amount; Sovereign of the Seas was intended as a propaganda as well as war.
In fact, the ship-money tax levied by Charles for his Naval program was much resented by “his faithful and loving subjects”, and is one of the excesses that led to his overthrow and execution in 1649.
Under Oliver Cromwell’s Commonwealth, the ship was renamed Sovereign, and following the restoration of Charles II in 1660; she was rebuilt and renamed Royal Sovereign.

Either way, HMS Medea's voyage turned out to be a perilous one and there were two occasions on which disaster was narrowly averted.
In 1992 a new HM Stationary Office publication on the British Crown Jewels and regalia gave the revised weight of 105.602 metric carats for the Koh-I-Noor and not the 108.93 metric carat conversion figure previously published.
