HMS Spartan (S105) is a nuclear powered submarine of the Royal Navy Swiftsure class.
HMS Spartan was launched on April 7, 1978 by Lady Lygo, wife of Admiral Sir Raymond Lygo.
HMS Spartan was ordered to sail south for the Falkland Islands two days before the Argentine invasion of the islands on March 30, 1982.

The Swiftsure class submarines have a displacement in the region of 5,000 tonnes and are 82.9 metres long with a beam of 9.8 metres and a draught of 8.5 metres.
Similarly the number of missiles she fired is unclear- originally 65 cruise missiles were purchased by the UK and Splendid reportedly rearmed at 'a NATO base' (believed to be Sicily) during the conflict.

During the 1982 Falklands conflict, the British War Cabinet ordered the submarine HMS Splendid to find the Argentine aircraft carrier 25 De Mayo and sink it.
This was justified in the sense that, although the carrier was to the northwest of the Exclusion Zone, the aircraft posed a threat to the British Task Force.
In the event, HMS Splendid failed in this task.
