HMS Captain was a British turret ironclad of 6950 tons displacement built in 1869 and lost in 1870 when it capsized off Finisterre.
Like HMS Courageous, HMS Glorious was completed in 1917 as a fast cruiser for use in the Great War in the Baltic, but by the 1920s with Britain wanting to increase her aircraft carrier strength she was converted to an aircraft carrier, as was HMS Courageous.
HMS Wasp was a British steam gunboat, which was lost in September 1887 while on a passage from Singapore to Hong-Kong.

 HMS Suffolk (55) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMS Suffolk (55) was the Kent class cruiser for the Royal Navy.
During May 1941 Suffolk was involved in the Battle of the Denmark Strait and the sinking of the German battleship Bismarck.
Suffolk was allocated to Bisco on 25 March 1948 and was scrapped at J Cashmore's (Newport, Wales) where she arrived on 24 June 1948.

HMS Suffolk was out of action until February 1941.

 The Suffolk Regiment
The Suffolk Regiment has a 274 year history, and was originally raised by the Duke of Norfolk in 1685, as the 12th Regiment of Foot, to suppress the threatened Monmouth Rebellion.
In 1782 it became the East Suffolk Regiment but the Depot of the Regiment was finally established at Bury St Edmunds in the Gibraltar Barracks in 1878.
In 1953 the 358 (Suffolk Yeomanry) Medium Regiment RATA was granted the Honorary Freedom of the Borough of Bury St Edmunds.

HMS Hood, the ‘Mighty Hood’ as she was popularly known in the Royal Navy, was the largest warship in the world when she was commissioned in 1920 and became a symbol of British Naval strength in the inter-war years.
So it was that shortly after midnight, HMS Suffolk reported that she had lost radar contact with the German vessels.
Of HMS Hood herself, all that remained on the surface was a morass of floating debris and an oil slick 4" deep.

The Norfolk, was still at 24,000 meters from the German ships, the Suffolk was at 29,000 meters and both were still not joining in the engagement (34).
The impact occurred on centre ship, under the mainmast: the bow of a service boat was hit and splinters fell all over (seriously damaging the catapult system used to launch the Arado reconnaissance aircraft), than the shell emerged on the starboard side without exploding.
By doing this it appears to have confirmed that the torpedo origin was assumed to have been the Hood (55) and that the torpedoes were at their maximum range.

The evidence supplied by Captain Carslake as regards the noise of the explosion which sank HMS Invincible in 1916, is of interest in this connection and gives an indication of the totally different impression that a single occurrence may have on the minds of different witnesses in like circumstances.
It must be emphasised however, that the efficiency of the flashtight arrangements in the turret is dependent on the structure itself not being wrecked or distorted by bomb blast.

The Suffolk Regiment was a British army infantry unit raised in east Suffolk in 1685 and named the 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot in 1782, whereupon it became known as the 'Old Dozen'.
The West Suffolk Militia was a special reserve battalion of the Suffolk Regiment during the early part of the 20th century.
A party of Royal Marines was landed from HMS Vindictive on the mole, to cause what damage they could, while a submarine packed with explosives went beneath the bridge connecting the mole with the shore and exploded, cutting off the defenders on the mole from any reinforcement.

The master and 45 crewmembers were picked up by HMS Marguerite & landed at Freetown on 6 June 1941 - Gravelines, a straggler from Convoy HX-127, was torpedoed by U-147 NW of Bloody Foreland and broke in two.
The afterpart of the Gravelines sank and the forepart was towed to the Clyde and beached at Kames Bay on 3 June.
On 1 June, they were picked up by HMS Pict after being located by aircraft and taken to Freetown, where the wounded men were taken to a hospital ship.

There were seven ships of the Kent class built for the Royal Navy (HMS Berwick, Cornwall, Cumberland, Dorsetshire, Kent, Norfolk and Suffolk) and two ships, HMAS Australia and Canberra, built for the Royal Australian Navy.
The British Kents were reconstructed in the 1930s, with increases in armour and the number of 2 pounder guns increased from eight to sixteen in two octuple mounts.
HMS Norfolk and Suffolk were equipped with radar which was used to good advantage when they shadowed the Bismarck during the RN's attempts to hunt her down after the sinking of HMS Hood.

My intention is to provide anyone who seeks it, useful information regarding the medal commemorating the 1872-76 worldwide voyage of HMS Challenger, which (in hindsight) celebrates the beginning of the modern science of oceanography.
He is reputed in Dictionary of National Biography 20th Century and The Times' obituary to have served as a Naval Cadet on HMS Castor during the South African War, 1850-53, but he is not on the Medal Roll.
He was Chief Scientist for the dredging voyages of HMS Porcupine and Lightning, and authored The Depths of the Sea in 1873, which summarized the findings of these voyages and presented a case for a global oceanographic voyage of exploration.
