  Swiftsure class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It originally contained six boats, but HMS Swiftsure was decommissioned in 1992 due to damage suffered to the pressure hull during trials.
HMS Splendid followed in 2004 due to defence cuts meaning a reduction in the RN SSN fleet.
HMS Spartan and HMS Sovereign were decommissioned in January 2006.

This is the Tri-ang Minic Ships model of HMS Swiftsure one of a proposed class of eight Light Cruisers, known as the Minotaur Class, which were ordered under the 1941 and 1942 Warship Construction Programmes.
HMS Swiftsure was the only one of the Group 1 ships to commission in the Royal Navy HMS Minotaur being transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy and renamed HMCS Ontario.
A planned modernisation of HMS Swiftsure in the late 1950's was cancelled due to cost as well as the belated commissioning of the Group 2 ships of this class HMS Lion, HMS Tiger and HMS Blake.

This is a model of HMS Tiger that I created by modifying a damaged original M 761 HMS Swiftsure model.
HMS Tiger was one of a proposed class of eight Light Cruisers, known as the Minotaur Class, which were ordered under the 1941 and 1942 Warship Construction Programmes.
A similar planned conversion for HMS Lion was cancelled due to a lack of funds and she has the distinction of being the Royal Navy's last "all gun cruiser" decommissioning in early 1972.

HMS Swiftsure first engaged the French Achille for 40 minutes, leaving her badly damaged, before other British ships joined the action, and her boats helped rescue the crew of Achille when she caught fire.
HMS Swiftsure was captained by William Gordon Rutherford, the son of John Rutherford of Bowland Stow, near Edinburgh, and Frances, widow of Gabriel Johnson, Governor of North Carolina.

HMS Swiftsure was built by Vickers Armstrong on the Tyne and launched on the 4th February 1943.
HMS Blake was built by Fairfield and launched on the 20th December 1945.
HMS Blake was kept in reserve at Chatham from 1980 until shortly before the Dockyard closed in 1984, when she was sold for scrap.

Signals were made to and from "Frederick Carl" and "Swiftsure", each manned and armed all boats, the "Swiftsure's" boats boarding the "Vittoria", the "Frederick Carl's", the "Almanza".
When the day arrived to remove the ships, a party of men was sent from the "Swiftsure" to the "Vittoria" (the 2nd division to which I belonged) and also from the German to the "Almanza".

He is remembered today as the founder of the English colony of Bermuda, also known officially as the Somers Isles.
Somers commanded several British ships between 1600 and 1602, including the HMS Vanguard, HMS Swiftsure and HMS Warspite.

The Swiftsure's second tour of duty was from April, 1889 to June, 1890, with Admiral Algernon C.F. Heneage.
The navy training ketch HMCS Oriole is Swiftsure's "Grand Old Lady." She holds the participation record for entering 48 of the 60 races to the Swiftsure Bank.
Swiftsure held in late June, as a part of the combined PIYA and PCYA regatta - R Vic YC last hosted this double event in 1925.

In the belief that a German invasion of Norway was imminent Flag Officer Submarines ordered HMS Thistle to Stavanger with orders to sink any enemy vessel that she may spot in the harbour.
It was later discovered that U4, the U-boat Thistle had previously attacked had, sighted the submarine on the surface and sunk her with torpedoes.
The Schiff remained on the scene until 0500 the next morning secure in the knowledge that she had sunk the submarine.

The Swiftsure was sent to Chatham to be docked before her trials.
Maybe it is because of the long thin elegant lines of Swiftsure, compared to the short squat form of the typical predreadnought.
There are a lot of bollards, plates, fittings, capstan bases, anchor chain plates on the forecastle that add great detail and interest to the model.

As you would expect for a design originally for overseas navy these ships were quite distinctive from the normal British designs with wide spaced funnels and prominent cranes between them, smaller main gun turrets.
18 April 1915 one of her picket boats along with one from HMS Majestic destroyed the grounded British submarine E15 to prevent capture.
Likewise the 14 pounder anti torpedo boat guns were unique to this class.
