HMS Trenchent, the fith of the Trafalgar Class was commissioned in 1989, the sixth, HMS Talent, in 1990 and the seventh, HMS Triumph, in 1991.
HMS Astute is the biggest and most powerful attack submarine to be built for the Royal Navy and, under the Smart Acquisition programme, is being built at roughly one fifth more quickly than earlier boats, with lower running costs and will have a much smaller ship’s company.
HMS Astute will displace 7,200 tonnes dived and is 97 metres long, she will have six weapons tubes a massively increased firepower compared to predecessors and will be equipped from day one to operate cruise missiles.

With regard to the reactor fault found on HMS Tireless it has now been disclosed that there are signs of this fault on a total of seven nuclear submarines.
Any decision about HMS Triumph would appear to be based on the fact that this is the newest boat and no signs have been seen in paperwork from earlier inspections of her reactor.
HMS Talent is only one and a half years older than HMS Triumph, and only three years older than the Trident submarine, HMS Vanguard.
