HMS Tartar (F123) was a Tribal-class frigate of the Royal Navy (RN).
Tartar undertook deployments to the West Indies and Far East and in 1968, Tartar deployed to the Persian Gulf, which was, at that time, quiet a tense period for diplomatic relations between the UK and Iran, which was then ruled by Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi.
Tartar was in the thick of it for much of the deployment, with a number of encounters with the notorious Icelandic gunboats, specifically with Tyr, who often got entangled with RN warships and British fishing trawlers during the Cod Wars.

In August 1942, TARTAR and her Tribal sisters, escorted the Pedestal Convoy from the United Kingdom to Malta.
On 21st January 1944, TARTAR completed a major refit in which 20mm guns were installed on the bridge wings, 20mm Oerlikons replaced the quadruple 0.5 inch machine guns and internal accommodation was rearranged.
Steaming to the Far East, TARTAR assisted in the hunting of the remainder of the Japanese Fleet and minesweeping operations until she returned home in November 1945.

'HMS Gladiolus' corvette (925t) - On 1st July 1940 the 'Gladiolus' forced 'U 26' to the surface and was, in company with another ship and a Sunderland flying boat, instrumental in forcing the U boat's crew to scuttle their vessel.
The 'Eridge' was able to repay her debt to 'HMS Aldenham' (the ship that towed her to Alexandria) which was damaged after she ran aground, spares were taken from 'Eridge' (now classed as a hulk) to repair the 'Aldenham'.
'HMS Pakenham' destroyer (1,540t) - Took part in the action that captured the 'U 559' on 30th October 1942 (see the entry for that date in the diary) - After being damaged during battle with Italian destroyers, she was finally sunk by enemy aircraft off Sicily on 16th April 1943.

The hurried activity was in response to a report that the cruiser, HMS Sybille was aground on the rocks south of Lamberts Bay on the Cape west coast, and the Doris was rushing to her assistance.
The HMS Sybille was a twin screw, second-class cruiser of 3400 tons, built in 1890 by R. Stephenson of Newcastle-on-Tyne.
Both the Sybille and the HMS Partridge have been linked to this incident, but it now seems to be generally accepted that the vessel involved was in fact the Partridge rather than the Sybille.

He eventually arrived at HMS Lanka in Sri Lanka in the spring or summer of 1945 and probably travelled across the island to join HMS Tartar, a Tribal Class Destroyer, at Trincomalee in July 1945.
HMS Tartar was active in the closing stages of the war against Japan assisting in the hunting of the remainder of the Japanese Fleet and minesweeping operations off Penang and Singapore.
It was during this mission that crew members from Tartar were involved in the relief of POW's from the infamous Changi Camp in Singapore and Tartar was used to transport some of the liberated prisoners.

Membership is open to all who served in the Type 81 Frigate F133 and her predecessor the Tribal Class Destroyer F43/G43.

Prior to the invasion of Russia by Germany, Force "K" consisting of Punjabi, HMS Aurora, HMS Nigeria and HMS Tartar left Scapa Flow for Spitsbergen with the intention of investigating that island's use as a naval base.
Soon she was back at Scapa Flow and while in company with HMS Ashanti, the German air force attacked for the first time on 17th October.
She shared the Hurd Deep patrol with HMS Ashanti and the rest of her assignments were with the 10th D.F. from June 1944 onwards.

When HMS Somali was completed, she spent most of January 1939 around Portland England carrying out torpedo and harbour exercises in severe weather.
Somali was with HMS Afridi and other Tribals when HMS Gurkha was lost in action.
She was also one of the ships that investigated Norwegian fiords as suitable landing spots for an Allied Expeditionary Force and later participated in many of the assaults on German held positions.

She set sail from the Clyde with her sister carriers HMS Colossus, HMS Glory and HMS Venerable, and escorted by the Destroyer Escorts, HMCS Assiniboine, HMS Cotton, HMS Inman, HMS Stockham, HMS Tartar and HMS Ulysses.
Between 29th March to 18th November 1949, HMS Contest, was a C Class Destroyer, whose duty was to be guard destroyer 'chasing' aircraft carriers to pick up any ditched pilots, HMS Illustrious and HMS Vengeance were two of the carriers involved.
