Tilbury was commissioned by Captain George Delaval who had returned from the Barbary States after negotiating the release of English slaves held in Turkish Africa; he sailed the Tilbury back to Africa, taking with him a large merchant ship in which to embark the prisoners.
HMS Chatham was renamed Tilbury for the last four years of her life; she was then broken up at Chatham.
Ewart "transferred to HMS Tilbury and went to Yalta", where he met Prince Cyril Orlof who was trying to make contact with the Dowager Empress Maria Feodorovna and attempt to persuade her to take passage out of Russia on a Royal Navy vessel.

H.M.S. Suddenly there were ships packed three and four deep around the basins from carriers to landing ships, destroyers to fast patrol boats but gradually they were disposed of, refitted or placed in reserve in almost any river or creek that could be found.
H.M.S. Post war relaxation of training gradually took place and a reduction in the number of ships led to the a shrinking need for servicemen and dockyard staff which accelerated towards and beyond the 'Festival of Britain' in 1951.
H.M.S. War time destroyers had lumps built on their upper decks and became frigates and fast minelayers were brought out of Reserve to race around again, at least for a little while.

HMS Comfort now approaches but is fired upon by the Grafton who mistook her for a German ship.
Her sole escort was the destroyer HMS Griffin which rescued a total of 766 of the troops and crew on board and landed them at Greenock, the wounded being taken to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride.
HMS Wryneck and HMS Diamond were both sunk in the attack with the loss of nearly both their crews and all the survivors of the Slamat.

 Empire Windrush - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Empire Windrush arrived at Tilbury on 22 June 1948, carrying 492 passengers from Jamaica wishing to start a new life in the United Kingdom.
The burned-out hulk of Empire Windrush was taken in tow by the destroyer HMS Saintes of the Royal Navy's Mediterranean Fleet, 32 miles northwest of Cape Caxine.
HMS Saintes attempted to tow the ship to Gibraltar in worsening weather, but Empire Windrush sank before first light the following morning, Monday 30 March 1954.

HMS Excellent, it was used for Torpedo and Mining training from 1872 but became an independent command on 26 April 1876 when it moved to Portchester Creek to become the home of the Torpedo Branch.
HMS Vernon, successfully removed the fuze from a Type GC mine underwater although the mine exploded as it was towed inshore.

Current projects include the recovery of Le Chameau, a French ship lost in 1725 off the rocks of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia that was carrying hundreds of thousands of gold and silver coins, religious pieces, ornate artillery and other artifacts associated with the prominent and wealthy passengers who perished with the vessel.
Artifact Recovery & Conservation, Inc. (ARC), a SVXA operating company, is working on the recovery of HMS Fantome, one vessel in a convoy of "plunder ships", which evidence indicates was carrying looted treasures from Washington, DC landmarks after the British invasion in 1812.
The HMS Tilbury is another ship likely to have been carrying an estimated half-million silver Spanish pillar dollars before it was lost in a hurricane in 1757.

According to the London Metro newspaper HMS Grimsby collided with a ferry and a pleasure cruiser yesterday, 29 September, whilst a member of her crew went overboard from a dinghy.
Returning to port with a fault the ship suffered a problem with its starboard propulsion, pulled by strong currents the craft was pushed down river and collided with the Princess Pocahonas, a moored ferry, and pleasure cruiser.
A member of the team went overboard and had to be rescued by a police launch.

Immediately after the invasion the survivors of the LCA Hedgerow flotillas returned to HMS Cricket and under the command of Capt. De Spon, RM, were again encamped in tents situated in the fields each side of the A27, between the Swan public house and Camp D at Bursledon Bridge.
Meanwhile eighty Royal Marines, forming part of the reserve landing craft crews, had left HMS Cricket for Tilbury Docks where they embarked on the transports Cap Touraine (French) and Thyoville (Belgian.) As they sailed for Normandy through the Dover Straits they were fired on by the German heavy gun batteries at Cap Gris Nez.
HMS Cricket now assumed a role as a re-grouping base for combined operations personnel and a training centre for operations in the Far East.

Early in September the new fleet carrier HMS Illustrious, with an armoured flight deck, battleship HMS Valiant and two cruisers are transferred in this way in Operation 'Hats'.
The arrival of HMS Illustrious allows Admiral Cunningham to go ahead with his plans to attack the Italian battlefleet at Taranto.

Smaller craft and wooden hulls which are already permanently docked, such as HMS Victory, are unlikely to suffer through lack of a suitable `hole in the ground', but very large steel hulls will always be at risk in the event of unforeseen dock closures.

Among the ships lost was the HMS Tilbury, a 1,124-ton, 64-gun warship that was carrying an estimated half-million silver Spanish Pillar Dollars, the legendary “pieces of eight” that are among the most fabled of historic coins.
Holburne’s 20-ship fleet, which included the HMS Tilbury, had fully assembled at the mouth of Louisburg ’s harbor by August 20 and was taunting the safely anchored, 24-ship French fleet by sailing back and forth in front of the harbor’s mouth, flying its flags and firing its guns.
The 68-gun HMS Grafton struck a rock but fortunately was able to get clear of it; the 14-gun brig Ferret took on water and sank; the Tilbury also struck either a rock or sandbank but was unable to free itself.

I've almost completed an HMS Nabob (Canada's first carrier, despite not having an "HMCS" prefix), and hope to put in a diorama with an HMS Bickerton prior to both of them being torpedoed whilst part of the task force that was hunting down the Tirpitz in August 1944.
Recently completed a 1/700 revell HMS Ark Royal, converted with the help of White Ensign Models to HMS Illustrious for a friend of mine who served on her in the early 80's.

The reason for choosing Tilbury follows the award by StoraEnso of a new contract for shipment of 800,000 tons paper per year to their new distribution centre in Tilbury.

French ambitions to avenge the defeat at Waterloo persuaded the British Government to embark on a programme to strengthen the Dockyards and Harbours of the United Kingdom and as part of this plan a new work at East Tilbury incorporating the existing fortification was constructed and known as East Tilbury Battery.
Due to the great advances made in the performance of artillery many alterations were made in the forts design during its construction, but despite this, when it was completed in 1874, it was virtually obsolete.
By the 1890's the powerful East Tilbury Battery of breach loading guns had been built just north of the fort, which superseded the greater part of the armament of muzzle loading guns at Coalhouse.

All MCDOs and MW Officers who qualified before HMS Vernon paid off as an independent Command (31 Mar 1986) are again reminded of their entitlement to free Honorary Life Membership of HMS Nelson Wardroom Mess as a legacy of the transfer of Vernon's remaining mess funds to Nelson on closure.
He had been based with the team in HMS Tamar in Hong Kong but had moved down when the Commander-in-Chief and his staff, of which he was one, moved to the Singapore Naval Base at Sembawang.

As a centrepiece for the Navy’s Remembrance weekend celebrations, the 22,500 tonne Portsmouth-based warship – known affectionately to her crew as ‘Lusty’ - will be steamed up the Thames on the afternoon of Friday 10 Nov, passing under the QEII Bridge at 1420 and through the Thames Barrier at 1510.
The Commanding Officer, Captain Tim Fraser RN said “It is a great honour to bring HMS Illustrious to support the City of London in its Act of Remembrance as well as being able to reinforce the Ship’s affiliations with the City.
We have a strong bond with London in general and the City in particular, and it’s a special honour to be here for such an important weekend.
