Nuclear submarine HMS Triumph is to undergo a refit which should allow her to continue front-line operations for up to 20 years.
Triumph’s withdrawal from the front line was marked by a decommissioning ceremony shortly after the boat returned from visiting Brest in France.
HMS Triumph was the last of the seven Trafalgar-class submarines to be built, and she was launched at the Vickers yard in Barrow-in-Furness on February 16, 1991.

HMS Triumph (R16) (1944–1981) was a Colossus-class light fleet aircraft carrier, laid down during World War II on 27 January 1943.
Triumph, escorted by the WWII veteran Cossack, who would also have an escort role with her sister-ship Theseus, was refueled and provisioned at the Royal Australian Naval base at Kure, Japan.
Triumph was based in Singapore after her conversion, being involved in a major exercise in 1968 in the Far East, with numerous capital ships from Britain and other nations taking part, as well as dozens of destroyers and frigates, with Triumph being used as a heavy repair and transport ship for troops.

HMS Tireless arrived in Gibraltar on 19th May and the local population was told that it would only be there for a short time and would then sail to Devonport where it would be repaired.
HMS Triumph was sent home to Devonport from the Mediterranean and it docked on 27th October.
The Defence Minister said that HMS Triumph would be used in support of Trident and so it is likely to sail in Scottish waters and to visit Faslane.

With regard to the reactor fault found on HMS Tireless it has now been disclosed that there are signs of this fault on a total of seven nuclear submarines.
Any decision about HMS Triumph would appear to be based on the fact that this is the newest boat and no signs have been seen in paperwork from earlier inspections of her reactor.
HMS Talent is only one and a half years older than HMS Triumph, and only three years older than the Trident submarine, HMS Vanguard.
