 (1990-1994) Upholder Class
HMS Upholder was the first of an entirely new class of diesel-electric submarine to be built for the Royal Navy.
When HMS UPHOLDER eventually entered service in 1989, she was already a year late into service and had the distinction of being the first fighting vessel to join the fleet which could not, albeit for technical reasons, fire a shot in anger - her doors were sealed awaiting a refit to repair the problem.
The new HMS Upholder was originally presented with the official design but, after lengthy discussions, has been allowed to revert to Wanklyn's crest.

Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia - - HMS Upholder   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
HMS Upholder was one of a class of coastal submarines built just before World War II and designed for training surface forces in antisubmarine warfare.
At about 2030 on May 24, Upholder was recharging her batteries on the surface when Wanklyn sighted three large troopships and four or five destroyers steaming at 20 knots—nearly twice Upholder's operational speed.
Such was the standard of skill and daring, that the ship and her officers and men became an inspiration, not only to their own flotilla, but to the fleet of which it was a part, and Malta, where for so long HMS Upholder was based.

The Upholders' Company established a link with the first HMS 'Upholder' (1940-1942) during the second World War when the Worshipful Company adopted the submarine and sent the Ship's Company books, food parcels and many other comforts which, we believe, helped to relieve the austere conditions aboard a wartime submarine at that time.
The second submarine named 'Upholder' was built by VSEL for the Royal Navy and launched by Her Royal Highness the Duchess of Kent on 2nd December 1986.
The new 'Upholder Class' was, unfortunately, not to stay in service for many years and HMS Upholder was de-Commissioned at the end of April 1994.

FREE MARKET FAIRY TALES: On This Day ... in 1915 & Others
In the Mediterranean, south of Sicily, the submarine HMS Upholder, commanded by Lieutenant Commander Wanklyn, managed at immense risk to penetrate a heavily escorted Axis convoy and sink a large troopship - the 18,000 ton liner Conte Rosso - bound for North Africa.
The attack was made even more difficult by a defect with the submarine's listening gear, forcing her to remain at periscope depth for the entire penetration of the convoy.
Upholder then had to endure a heavy depth charge retaliation from the escorts, but survived to sink some 100,000 tons of shipping before being lost the following year.
