HMS Upholder is a British Upholder Class patrol submarine of 2455 tons displacement dived launched in 1986.
HMS Upton has a double mahogany hull on an aluminium frame and is powered by two Paxman Deltic 18A-7A diesel engines providing a top speed of 15 knots and a range of 2500 miles at 12 knots.
HMS Ursula is a British Upholder Class patrol submarine of 2455 tons displacement dived launched in 1990.

On 14th December 1939, Ursula was on patrol in the estuary of the Elbe and through her periscope her captain, Lt Cdr GC Phillips, sighted a German Köln class cruiser, the Leipzig, escorted by six destroyers.
Though the waters of the Elbe estuary are shallow and to dive deep is a dangerous undertaking involving the risk of getting stuck on a sandbank, Phillips had either to take the risk or to miss his attack.
His decision was instantaneous and he took the Ursula down to dive beneath the destroyer screen and get within range of the cruiser.

HMS Trenchent, the fith of the Trafalgar Class was commissioned in 1989, the sixth, HMS Talent, in 1990 and the seventh, HMS Triumph, in 1991.
HMS Astute is the biggest and most powerful attack submarine to be built for the Royal Navy and, under the Smart Acquisition programme, is being built at roughly one fifth more quickly than earlier boats, with lower running costs and will have a much smaller ship’s company.
HMS Astute will displace 7,200 tonnes dived and is 97 metres long, she will have six weapons tubes a massively increased firepower compared to predecessors and will be equipped from day one to operate cruise missiles.

HMS Dolphin closed as a submarine base on 30th September 1998, although the last RN submarine, HMS Ursula left early 1994.
The RNSMS staff marched into HMS Raleigh and were welcomed onboard by Commodore Lockwood on 31 January 2000 to start a new chapter in the history of RNSMS.
The establishment name Dolphin came from the 929 ton composite screwed sloop HMS Dolphin that was berthed at Fort Blockhouse from 1906; this name lives on at Raleigh in Dolphin Block and the trainee submariner division, Dolphin Squadron.

HMS Upholder was the first of an entirely new class of diesel-electric submarine to be built for the Royal Navy.
When HMS UPHOLDER eventually entered service in 1989, she was already a year late into service and had the distinction of being the first fighting vessel to join the fleet which could not, albeit for technical reasons, fire a shot in anger - her doors were sealed awaiting a refit to repair the problem.
The collection of photographs to the left shows HMS Unseen being lifted out of the water and moved inside the huge Devonshire Dock Hall for her six month long docking period.

The Light-cruiser HMS Blonde was heading K1, K3, K4 and K7 in line ahead off the Danish coast when she was forced to turn sharply to port to avoid three cruisers, that crossed her bows from starboard to port.
HMS Undine was on her fourth war patrol in January 1940 when her asdic failed due to a leak.
In October 1940 HMS Rainbow was on patrol in the Mediterranean, operating in the Gulf of Taranto and later in the Gulf of Otranto.

I joined the navy as a seaman at H.M.S. Ganges on the 23 rd of February 1970 at the age of 15.
I was then drafted to the Leander class frigate HMS Euryalus where I was to enjoy a trip out the far east, Singapore, Hong Kong and a stint on the Biara patrol, exciting time for a young lad.
After a two year stint I was of to HMS Collingswood to train as an electrician, a good career decision, then on to HMS Dolphin in January 77 to train as a diesel submariner, another good decision.

One of Canada's four new submarines sprung a leak during its trial run on Tuesday, forcing the sub to limp back to port in Scotland for urgent repairs.
HMS Ursula was forced to abandon its trials after water flowed into the submarine through a small tube-like device used to send signal markers to the surface when the vessel is submerged.
HMS Ursula returned to Scotland because it is still under the command of the British Royal Navy.

Two other destroyers, HMS KINGSTON (Lt Cdr P Somerville) and HMS KASHMIR (Lt Cdr H A King), responded to HMS ICARUS's alert; all were under the direction of Captain Lord Louis Mountbatten aboard the HMS KELLY.
Directed by HMS ICARUS to the likely spot, HMS KINGSTON was able to establish ASDIC contact and made two depth-charge attacks, which jammed the diving planes of U 35 and put her at a sharp up angle.
HMS ICARUS, HMS KINGSTON and HMS KASHMIR issued formal reports to the Admiralty in December 1939.

HMS Nottingham which almost sank in Australia in July 2002 has been moved to the sea wall at Portsmouth as her £26m repair job nears completion.

 The Canadian Submarines
This was chosen because of their resemblance to the British "C" class of the their Submarines.
After three years of cruising and training on the west coast they were ordered to Europe, and on 21 June 1917 set sail for Halifax with their mother ship HMS SHEARWATER.
HMCS Victoria and Windsor have been "Canadianized" HMCS Corner Brook is in the process and HMCS Chicoutimi is in the process in conjunction with repairs taking place as a result of a major fire on board.
