  HMS Vanguard
The first HMS Vanguard, 32, was a galleon launched in 1586 from Woolwich and was key in the action against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
The fourth HMS Vanguard was a third-rate, launched in 1748, that took part in the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 under Admiral Edward Boscawen, and later in the capture of Quebec in 1759 under Admiral Charles Saunders[?].
Vanguard was renamed Ajax in 1867, to allow her former name to be given to an ironclad battleship then being laid down in the ways.

The second HMS Vanguard, of the British Royal Navy was a 56-gun ship launched in 1631, officially rebuilt from the first Vanguard but likely only sharing some of the timber and fittings.
In 1667 Vanguard was scuttled to form a barrier in the Medway River to prevent the Dutch fleet from capturing or burning the British ships there.

She was commissioned on 1 May 1916 having cost almost £2.5 million, the eleventh Royal Navy vessel to bear the Royal Oak name, replacing a pre-dreadnought that had been scrapped in 1914.
She fought in the Battle of Jutland, in line behind the HMS Iron Duke of John Jellicoe.
She was refitted from 1922 to 1924, the main changes being the removal of torpedo tubes and a general upgrading of her anti-aircraft defences.

On 14th April 1953 HMS Conway was under tow from her normal mooring to Birkenhead up the Menai Strait/ the Swellies between the Welsh mainland and Anglesey.
Close to a place called the Platters on the Caernarfon side of the strait she ran aground due to strong currents and could not be refloated.
Admiral Sturdee was a Lieutenant on HMS Martin opposite in 1880.
