The first HMS Vanguard, 32, was a galleon launched in 1586 from Woolwich and was key in the action against the Spanish Armada in 1588.
The fourth HMS Vanguard was a third-rate, launched in 1748, that took part in the capture of Louisbourg in 1758 under Admiral Edward Boscawen, and later in the capture of Quebec in 1759 under Admiral Charles Saunders[?].
Vanguard was renamed Ajax in 1867, to allow her former name to be given to an ironclad battleship then being laid down in the ways.

HMS Warrior was a compromise, with her centre of gravity in the middle, and consequently, problems were inevitable.
HMS Warrior also had a figurehead on the end of her bow, and along with her sister ship, HMS Black Prince and the HMS Rodney of 1888, was one of the last of the British front-rank ships to carry a figurehead.
HMS Warrior is now the only surviving iron warship in the world, and is on display in Portsmouth.

He was a Lieutenant (HMS Active) at the destruction of a Turkish squadron in the Dardanelles in 1807; served on HMS Spartan, in boat actions in the Adriatic, and at the reduction of Zante and neighbouring islands.
The coffin was carried by the crewmen of the Vanguard.

Vanguard, under the command of Captain Richard Dawkins, sailed out of Kingstown (now Dún Laoghaire) harbour on August 27, 1875, in company with three other ironclads, HMS Warrior, HMS Hector, and HMS Iron Duke.
Vanguard's sister ship, Iron Duke noticed she was drifting off course and began returning to her proper station.
The abandonment was completed in good order with Captain Dawkins the last of the 360 crew on board to leave and the only casualty was his dog which was lost.

During WW II her name was given to a Canadian Aircraft-Carrier and with the breaking up of HMS Vanguard in 1960 could be called the last surviving British battleship.
