In 1793 with the outbreak of the French Revolutionary wars Nelson was given command of HMS Agamemnon, and appointed to Lord Hood’s fleet, which was to serve in the Mediterranean.

The third-rate ship of the line HMS Colossus saw extensive action in the wars with Revolutionary France, including the capture of Toulon in 1793 and the Battle of Groix in 1795.
Following the Battle of the Nile on August 1, 1798, Colossus was used to transport the wounded, both British and French, as well as the treasure taken from the defeated French fleet.
Though victorious, the British ships were badly damaged at the Nile, and Colossus herself was so cannibalized that Murray even surrendered his spare anchor to Nelson's Vanguard.
