In 1918 VENDETTA was engaged as a patrolling destroyer and on fleet escort duties.
VENDETTA served in the Mediterranean with the 1st and 5th Flotillas from 1924 to 1933.
VENDETTA and the other four ships commissioned in the RAN at Portsmouth on 11th October 1933 to form the Australian Destroyer Flotilla, later to become famous as the 'Scrap Iron Flotilla'.

Three ships, Vampire, Vendetta and Voyager, were built for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) and were known as the Voyager-class, with another ship, Duchess, being loaned, then subsequently sold to them.
HMS Delight, and HMAS Duchess, Vampire and Vendetta took part in the Indonesian Confrontation, with Vendetta also seeing service during the Vietnam War in 1970.
Sadly, tragedy struck in peacetime, when in 1964, HMAS Voyager was cut in half by the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne and sank with the loss of eighty-one of her crew.

When "Prince of Wales" and "Repulse" were sunk, "HMAS Vendetta" was still in Kings Dry dock in Singapore with her guns on the dockside.
The "Vendetta" slowly continued her passage home behind "Ping Wo", in convoy with "HMS Electra" and "Yarra".
"Vendetta" was again at the mercy of the weather after she left Albany; the towline broke twice.

HMS Oberaon (21P) was an O class submarine laid down by HM Dockyard at Chatham in Kent on 22 April 1924, launched on 24 September 1926 and commissioned on 24 August 1927.
HMS Odin was depth charged by the enemy Italian destroyer Strale and the torpedo boat Baleno and sank in the Gulf of Taranto on 13 June 1940.

The Allied forces were centred on the Mediterranean fleet, consisting of the aircraft carrier HMS Formidable, the modernised World War I battleships HMS Barham, Valiant and Warspite (as flagship).
A second force, under Admiral Sir Henry Pridham-Wippell, consisted of the British light cruisers HMS Ajax, Gloucester and Orion, the Australian light cruiser HMAS Perth, and the British destroyers HMS Hasty, Hereward and Ilex — the Australian Vendetta had returned to Alexandria.
In addition, Allied warships attached to convoys were available: HMS Defender, Jaguar and Juno waited in the Kithira Channel and HMS Decoy, Carlisle, Calcutta Bonaventure and HMAS Vampire were nearby.

 HMAS Vendetta
VENDETTA underwent a refit from February to August 1967, and from then until February 1968 was involved mainly in exercises in the East Australia area.
In late December 1974, VENDETTA was one of the 13 RAN units which sailed to Darwin for relief operations in the wake of Cyclone Tracy which overwhelmed Darwin in the early hours of Christmas Day, causing the deaths of 49 people and reducing the city to rubble.
VENDETTA commenced what was to be her final overseas deployment in late June 1978, with port visits to Honiara and Manus Island, Subic Bay, Hong Kong, Singapore, Port Kelang, Surabaya, Penang and Christmas Island.

VENDETTA entered Alexandria for the first time on 12th January and until March 1940 her escort and patrol duties took her also to Marseilles, Malta, Gibraltar and Haifa.
Refitting of VENDETTA's engines was completed on 4th April and on the same day she proceeded with WATERHEN to join the inshore Squadron at Tobruk which had been captured by the British forces on 22nd January.
VENDETTA left Fremantle an 4th March and at King George Sound on 24th March (the journey from Fremantle to Albany having taken 5 days) the tow was transferred from PING WO to SS ISLANDER for the remainder of the tow to Melbourne.

HMS Vega was launched on 1st September 1917 and was sold for scrap in 1947.
HMS Vesper Long Range Escort Vessel was at Omaha beach on D day and after escorted convoys to Arrowmanchs, Antwerp and Ostend.
HMS Valentine was hit and beached off the Dutch coast in May 1940.

We were relieved by HMS ST BRIDES BAY and proceeded to Sasebo, Japan, having to go hundreds of miles out of our way to avoid a typhoon.
The devil was determined that I was not to be denied this culinary delight however, as the plate of stew slid gracefully off the table and landed on my lap without spilling a drop.
We were relieved by HMS CHARITY on 11th September and returned to Kure for a maintenance period and docking.

It was whilst conducting Fishery Protection patrol, South West of the UK, just as the majority of the ship’s company onboard HMS Mersey were sitting down to breakfast that the skipper of a French fishing vessel called the Mersey on VHF radio in French.
Sub Lieutenant Coxon (recently joined Mersey from a 6 month exchange to the French Navy) answered the call and ascertained that the vessel in question had quite a serious fuel leak on her engine and had a broken motor.
With Petty Officer Carvill having then ensured that the fishing vessel’s engine was navigationally safe, it was then explained to the skipper what had been done and the further actions required once the vessel was back alongside in port.

 OzMods 1/600 HMS Voyager
Named Voyager, Vendetta and Vampire respectively and based on a modified British Daring class design, HMAS Voyager was the first to be delivered.
She was launched 1st May 1952 by the wife of the then Prime Minister John Menzies and commissioned 12th February 1957.
The Voyager was replaced by a Royal Navy Daring class vessel named HMS Duchess, which was originally loaned to and then later bought by the Australian Government.

"D85" was HMS Quail 06/12/14 to 01/09/15 HMS Myrimidon was "D85" 01/09/15, and, HMS Syren was "D85" on 01/01/18 to 13/09/18.
HMS Ruby was "H85" 06/12/14 to 01/09/15, HMS Mermaid was "H85" 13/09/18.
"F85" 1918-19 was HMS Vanquisher but I have no details on her as yet.

Vendetta was one of three modified HMS Daring class destroyers built for the RAN shortly after WWII.

Upon graduation, at the age of sixteen, George joined HMS Ganges for his basic training in the Royal Navy.
Later spending much of his pre-war time with the Mediterranean Fleet based in Malta, primarily on board HMS Hero, and participating in the Spanish Civil War, where he recalled becoming the target of a bomber while driving the Captain ashore in a launch.
During his time in the Mediterranean Dad was never without his Kodak Portrait Hawkeye No.2 camera (which is still fully functional and in excellent condition), and took many photographs of the war, and the ships of various nations, which I hope to eventually feature in my Spanish Civil War pages.
