Venerable off the North West of Scotland, we were engaged in working up trials of the ship and it's two squadrons.
Venerable was the first of a number of Light Fleet Carriers the Royal Navy was building and commissioning as quickly as possible so as to increase the size of Britains contribution in the fight against Japan.
Venerable was ready but her squadrons were not.

After a discussion at Sunderland Maritime Heritage (SMH), it was decided to take up the Secretary's suggestion and build a replica of HMS Venerable, a 74-gun third-rate ship of the line which had been Admiral Duncan's flagship at the Battle of Camperdown.
HMS Venerable was chosen because of the Sunderland connection.
Venerable broke through the Dutch line and engaged de Winter's flagship, Vrijheid, from the lee side.

The end of September saw the return of HMS Indomitable to Sydney, her 11th carrier air group, No.s 885.887, 894 and 1772 Squadrons disembarking to Schofields, 885 Squadron disbanding upon arrival.

HMS Nabcatcher paid off on April 1st 1947,the Royal Naval Air Section at Kai Tak re-commissioning the same day as HMS Flycatcher, the name formerly belonging to the MONAB formation station in the UK.
HMS Flycatcher paid off on December 31st 1947; the RN Air Section facilities at Kai Tak Airport were reduced to a ‘care and Maintenance’ basis at 18 months notice to reopen.

On their return to England, Duncan left HMS Monarch and was not in active command again until 1782, when Keppel became First Lord of the Admiralty.
Duncan was appointed to HMS Blenheim and attached to Lord Howe’s fleet in the Mediterranean, where they were involved in the relief of Gibraltar and an encounter with a combined allied fleet off Cape Spartel.
He succeeded Sir John Jervis in command of HMS Foudroyant in 1782, and after the peace, was in command of HMS Edgar, a guard ship at Portsmouth for three years.

HMS Venerable was built by Cammell Laird, Birkenhead, and laid down 3 December 1942.
Refitted with replacement boilers [from the incomplete HMS Leviathan] she was commissioned into Argentinean Navy 22 August 1969.

HMS Glory flying her paying-off pennant on 8th December 1950, Glory leaves Grand Harbour to return to Devonport.
HMS Hermes was coverted to an Anti-submarine Carrier and fitted with a 'Ski-Jump' for Sea Harriers.
HMS Glory arrived in the Far East too late to take part in active combat during World War Two although she accepted the surrender of Japanese forces in New Guinea in 1945 and participated in the operation to repatriate ex-Japanese POWs following the war.

She served for only the last few months of World War II, In 1948 she was sold to the Netherlands and renamed HNLMS Karel Doorman (R81), and subsequently sold to Argentina and renamed Veinticinco de Mayo.
In 1948, Venerable's short career in the Royal Navy came to an end, when it was sold to the Dutch.
After the submarine HMS Conqueror sank General Belgrano, Veinticinco de Mayo returned to port, lest it too be sunk.

They flew on to H.M.S. Illustrious, just off Bondi Beach on March 1 and at Manus Island they were transferred to H.M.S. Victorious, an “Illustrious” class fleet carrier with the a Task Force in the British Pacific Fleet.
HMS Victorious did not take part in the formal surrender on 15 August but headed south to Manus Island with most of the British Pacific Fleet.
At Manus Bruce transferred from HMS Victorious to HMS Venerable (19 August 1945) and sailed south to take part in the surrender of Hong Kong.

The received title of this oil painting is the 'Launch of HMS 'Venerable' at Blackwall'.
All three 74s are visible here in the centre, with one of them, the 'Venerable', ready for launch and flying her launching flags just before that event on 19 April.
This large picture relates to another of similar size by Holman (BHC1866) showing the yard later in the year, possibly with the launch of the 44-gun 'Adventure' on 19 July, and what may be 'Venerable' lying fully rigged on the far left.

Sea Furies were used extensively throughout the Korean war, mainly in the ground attack role (with Fireflies), flying from HMS Glory, HMS Ocean, HMS Theseus and the Australian carrier HMAS Sydney.
Even in the Korean war the Sea Fury was one of the best of it's type, showing itself on many occasions to be superior to the more up-to-date enemy jets of the Korean conflict.
Fleet Air Arm Hawker Seafury y F.B. 11 O-114 of 802 squadron (HMS Ocean) flown by Lt P "Hoagy" Carmichael on 9 August 1952 shot down a MiG-15 was the first such kill by a piston-engine fighter, and the only kill by a British pilot flying a British aircraft during the Korean War.

Between 1911 and 1919, Laird built nine light cruisers and the last, HMS Achilles of 1932 was one of the three cruisers that cornered the German pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee in 1939.
Cammell Laird also completed three aircraft carriers, two fleet carriers both named HMS Ark Royal in 1939 and 1950, and the smaller HMS Venerable of 1943 which was sold to the Dutch navy.
The first HMS Ark Royal was sunk in the Mediterranean in 1941 and the second was a major component of the Royal Navy into the late 1970s.

The 25 de Mayo was originally built as the HMS Venerable.
The Skyhawks of the FAA and CANA carried out several gallant attacks against the British landing forces that were attempting to regain the Falklands.
The Royal Navy losses might have been even heavier were it not for the improper fusing of many bombs dropped by the Skyhawks, many of which failed to explode when they struck British ships.
