HMS Engadine was a seaplane tender which served in the First World War.
She was built as a Folkestone-Boulogne ferry by William Denny and Sons, launched on September 23 1911 and named after the Engadine valley in Switzerland.
She taken over by the Royal Navy in 1914 along with her sister ship HMS Riviera and modified by the construction of cranes and a hanger aft of the funnels so that she could carry four Short 184 seaplanes.

HMS Endymion like most of the Edgar class started the war as part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron which was tasked with enforcing the northern blockade on Germany.
HMS Warrior, Cochrane, Natal, Achilles Laid down 1903-1904, completed 1906-1907.
She was one of the many armoured cruisers sunk during the war with many of the rest relegated to secondary tasks by the end, the type being superseded by the battlecruiser.

She joined the 5th Squadron at the Nore in 1907 and transferred to the 2nd Cruiser squadron in 1909.
HMS Warrior went to Gibraltar and Sierra Leon before joining the Grand Fleet in December 1914.
She was so badly damaged that she was taken in tow by HMS Engadine (seaplane Tender) on the 31st May but foundered and sank on the 1st of June 1916.

The result was that HMS DEFENCE was sunk with the loss of all of her 893 crew at 1815 in the evening, HMS WARRIOR and HMS BLACK PRINCE withdrawing.
In mid May 2001, the remains of H.M.S. DEFENCE were found by the deep-diving technical divers of Deep Blue Expeditions, where she was sunk in the Battle of Jutland off Denmark in 1916.
The article accompanying the announcement of the discovery indicates that the ship was of an obsolete design by the time of the battle and also states that there was a loss of live of 903 of her crew.

A sixteen year old Scots girl, Barbara Thompson, recently married to the captain, was rescued by aborigines and lived with them until 16 October 1849, when she made contact with a water party from HMS Rattlesnake and taken aboard.
In 1869, collected pearl shells from Warrior Reef, Torres Strait, and established a succesful fleet of pearling vessels, adding seven especially built luggers from Sydney.
HMS Blanche arrived at Somerset, on the tip of Cape York, in April 1870, where a large punitive expedition was organised to capture those reponsible for the deaths.
