 HMS Warspite
The eighth and current Warspite is the nuclear submarine which started her career stalking nuclear vessels during the Cold War and later patrolled the waters around the Falkland Islands and the Argentinian coast following the war in 1982.
Warspite was retired from service at the end of the Second World War and in 1947 was being towed to the breaker's yard when, during a storm, she broke free from her tugs and ran aground in Prussia Cove, off the Cornish coast.
My Grandfather was a CPO on HMS Warspite during WW2, Unfortunately he passed away in 1993, I and my family would be eternally grateful to hear from anyone who may have known Eric Sussex or even better have some pictures of the crew which may include him aboard the Warspite or any information.

Her successor, HMS Warspite, the post-war submarine, was adopted by Hereford City, WEM's home town, Warspite being an old English name for Woodpecker, linked with the woodpeckers found in the cider orchards of Herefordshire.
On 22nd May she was hit by a 500 lb bomb which, together with a later near miss, necessitated repairs in the U.S. The repairs were followed by a spell with the Eastern Fleet, before returning to the Med in June 1943, where she was employed in bombardment duties in support of the Italian campaign.
They have also produced HMS Queen Elizabeth 1918 (WEM K 721), and we eventually hope to add HMS Barham 1941, representing her at the time of her sinking, and HMS Warspite 1916, the only accurate representation of her at Jutland.

Roskill was writing this history of the Warspite's in the 1950 and as such some views on the histories have changed (Hindsight is a wonderfull thing), and the new introduction to this edition gives a very fair and even analysis of the strength and waeknesses of Roskill work.
Warspite was without doubt the most sucessful Battleship of the most successfull Class in History.
HMS Warspite was the most successful British capital ship of the 20th century - you have to go back to Nelson's Victory to find comparable distinction.

At the end of July, 1950, she was refloated to go to a breakers yard in South Wales, but shortly sprang a leak in her boiler room and had to be towed to Marazion, quite close to St. Michaels Mount, and beached.
She was taken away piece by piece and by the end of August 1956, HMS Warspite was no more.
A fine granite stone memorial to HMS Warspite and those who served in her, stands by the slipway to the Mounts Bay Yacht Club's dinghy park, in the shadow of the new Lifeguard Lookout Station at Marazion.
