The group rushed ahead in a line, only to their line being broken by the air attack of the complement of the HMS Ravager that was escorting the convoy while at the same time both British cruisers rushed forward to face the enemy.
The battleships, HMS Nelson and HMS Warsprite, sailed in line abreast about 600 yards apart toward the last reported position of the enemy.
By 1625, the Warsprite was firing point-blank at a range of 4000 yards, while the Nelson continued to pound the enemy from a range of 12,000 yards.
