The Wreck of HMS Cricket (by Geoff Brown) - Introduction
Immediately bodies sprang to life and the anchor recently refitted at the busy Naval dockyards in Alexandria broke the still water, cementing her to her last resting place 34E 57' 42" N and 33E 48' 06" E one mile off the south coast of Cyprus known as the Ormidhia Bay.
HMS Cricket after 29 years of gallant service had come to her final resting place, to be used as target practice for young RAF pilots who had not even been a twinkle in their mother's eyes when the cricket had first been in action.
The Admiralty had already forgotten her and within one month she would be at the bottom of the sea, where she would lie as a wreck unknown for the next 41 years.

 Genetic regulator of lifespan identified
BOSTON, MA-- Researchers at Harvard Medical School (HMS) have discovered that a gene in yeast is a key regulator of lifespan.
A team led by David Sinclair, assistant professor of pathology at HMS, found that PNC1 is required for the lifespan extension that yeast experience under calorie restriction.
The finding implies that lifespan is not simply dependent on accumulated wear and tear or metabolism, as some researchers have suggested, but is at least partly controlled by an active genetic program in cells--one that could theoretically be boosted.

HMS Fable tears away from the docks with "Natalie's Party," a song that sounds positively electrified after the acoustic diversions of last year's Magical World of the Strands side project, suggesting the Head boys are just as glad to be back as we are to have them here.
There are actually a few letdowns on HMS Fable - "I Want You" and "Captain's Table" revisit old Head tunes a little too explicitly, and "Lend's Some Dough" is something of a throwaway, if a genuinely amusing one.

FOCUS - January 23, 2004 - NEUROLOGY: Faulty Membrane Repair May Lead To Muscular Dystrophy
Efforts to uncover the roots of the disease were rewarded in 1986 when HMS researcher Louis Kunkel uncovered a mutated gene in patients suffering from one of the most severe forms of the disease, Duchenne's muscular dystrophy.
The report, appearing in the Dec. 12 Journal of Biological Chemistry, "discloses a new pathway for the genesis of muscular dystrophy--that is, a failure of muscle repair," said Brown, HMS professor of neurology at MGH.
Working with Kunkel, HMS professor of pediatrics at Children's, the MGH researchers used a special program called Relevance Network Analysis to tease out 78 genes that seemed to be affected by the dysferlin lesion.
