 HMS Zulu
The first HMS Zulu was an F-Class destroyer launched September 16, 1909 at Hawthorn Leslie Shipyard[?] and commissioned in March, 1910.
She was launched on September 23, 1937, and commissioned on September 7, 1938.
Zulu was the only Tribal built with Seacat[?] missiles; her six sister frigates were built with two 40mm Bofor guns and fitted with Seacat during later refits.

HMS Zulu was a Tribal-class British destroyer, built in Glasgow by A. Stephens and Sons, her keel laid down on Aug 10th 1936 and launched on Sept 23rd 1937.
Just after she was completed, the HMS Zulu moved in Mediterranean and was based in Malta.
HMS Croome took off the most part of HMS Zulu's crew, and HMS Hursley took her in tow.

HMS Sikh started her naval life with the 1st Destroyer Flotilla (1st D. Her builders trials commenced in August 1938 and after being fitted with a gyro-compass and other equipment at Chatham, England she was completed on 2 November 1938 even though she had been commissioned a month earlier.
It was then decided that HMS Sikh and HMS Maori should return to Malta, to join HMS Zulu and form the 22nd D.F. This would act as a strike force against Axis supply convoys between Italy and North Africa.
The 4th Destroyer Flotilla comprising the British destroyers HMS Cossack, HMS Maori, HMS Sikh, HMS Zulu and the Polish destroyer Piorun was escorting convoy WS-8B when they recieved an order to leave the convoy and take part in the hunt for the German battleship Bismarck.

Page 4 of Admiralty report, H.M.S. Nubian No. 5/16 of 23 April 1940, confirms that my grandfather and his crew were taken aboard this Flotilla Class Destroyer during the course of the evening, Sunday 21 April 1940 and returned to Scapa Flow on Tuesday, 23 April 1940.
Commissioned with a Portsmouth crew on the 19th November 1938, Auckland worked up at Portland and sailed for her first assignment on 4th January 1939, arriving at Simonstown on the 17th February and cruised on the eastern coast of southern Africa during that summer.
On the 8th April 1941 Auckland arrived at Alexandria and transferred to the Mediterranean Fleet being based at Alexandria and covering convoys and operations along the Libyan coast until sunk by air attack off Tobruk on the 24th June 1941.

The HMS Invincible class of aircraft carriers were designed to replace the early post-war aircraft carriers that were HMS Ark Royal and HMS Hermes.
The third of class, HMS Indomitable, was later renamed HMS Ark Royal so as to continue the tradition of having an aircraft carrier in service named Ark Royal.
The role of the carriers, HMS Hermes and HMS Invincible, was crucial at this and subsequent stages in providing air defence and the means of attacking enemy ships and ground positions, while their helicopters provided constant anti-submarine protection.

The next major event was the Torpedo Attack on the Bismarck from Swordfish from HMS Ark Royal, which badly damaged the steering gear of the Bismarck which helped in the final destruction of the German battleship by Royal Navy Battleships.
The fairey Swordfish was also used in anti-submarine and anti-shipping roles, The Swordfish sunk more enemy ships (by Tonnage) than any other aircraft acting in the same roles.

At the outbreak of World War I, all twelve were on station with the Dover Patrol and saw action in the Channel and the North Sea.
While in action against the Germans between 26 - 29th October 1916, HMS ZULU and HMS NUBIAN both suffered damage, one on the bow and the other to the stern.
The resultant ship was re-commissioned as HMS Zubian although no such African tribe of this name existed.
