Office of Public Sector Information - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HMSO was established as a new department of HM Treasury on 5 April 1786, when John Mayor was appointed as its first "Superintendent".
In 1889, HMSO was granted Letters Patent under which it was appointed as Queen's Printer of Acts of Parliament ("printer to Her Majesty of all Acts of Parliament").
HMSO continues with its core responsibilities for the management of Crown copyright and the statutory responsibilities for production of legislation and the official Gazettes while providing advice and guidance for departments on official publishing matters.

Officer X had told him that she had explained to officer A that HMSO were not seeking an endorsement, as the university had provided one, but officer A had not wanted HMSO to be associated with the publication of the thesis.

 Recommendations Database - Report Recommendations
Although HMSO had a separate Accounting Officer, the Office of Public Service received, under a framework agreement, HMSO's corporate and business plans, its targets, annual accounts and periodic business reports, and were responsible for advising Ministers on the business.
Under the Framework Document for Her Majesty's Stationery Office (HMSO) (a department in its own right) neither Cabinet Office (the Department) nor the responsible Minister normally became involved in the day-to-day management of HMSO which was the responsibility of its Chief Executive.
This failure to take a close interest in HMSO was exacerbated after September 1995 when Ministers announced their decision to sell the business because the Office of Public Service took some time to start to get to grips with their vendor responsibilities.
