HMV's musical heritage goes all the way back to 1897, when The Gramophone Company arrived in London to build a European market for the gramophone and its flat disc records, invented in the USA some ten years earlier.
During the 1930s and 40s, sales gradually grew but it was not until the arrival of rock-n-roll and the beginning of the pop culture in the 1950s that sales really took off, aided by the arrival of the 45 rpm single and the 33 1/3 rpm long-playing record.
HMV is today one of the world's premier retailer of music, videos and computer games with almost 300 stores trading across the UK, Ireland, Germany, the USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Hong Kong and Singapore.
