HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen was a Royal Netherlands Navy minesweeper, famous for its escape from Surabaya, Java in 1942, disguised as a tropical island.
She was the third of eight Jan van Amstel-class minesweepers, built at Gusto in Schiedam, and named after the 17th century navy commander Abraham Crijnssen.
The crew covered her thickly with tree branches, so that to observers she looked like one of the many small jungle islets of the area, and she was able to pass by the Japanese navy undetected.

Then by chance it was discovered that one of the more famous WW II minesweepers, Abraham Crijnssen, built in 1936 had survived and was exploited since 1961 by the Dutch Sea cadets as a training vessel.

Until his appointment as Commanding Officer of HNLMS Jan van Brakel in December 1986, he worked in the Staff of Admiral Netherlands Fleet as Fleet programmer, responsible for programming the overall year schedules for ships and aircraft within the Royal Netherlands Navy.
In August 1987 he assumed command of HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen and was subsequently relieved as CO of HNLMS Jan van Brakel in November 1987.
From February 1989 until his appointment as Commanding Officer of HNLMS Tromp in June 1990, he served in the Naval Staff in The Hague as Deputy Head of Naval Tactics and Weapons Policy.
