Het schip was genoemd naar de Nederlandse zeeheld Michiel de Ruyter.
De ontdekking kreeg buiten duikkringen weinig aandacht, en haalde in 2004 nogmaals het nieuws.

HNLMS De Ruyter was a light cruiser of the Royal Netherlands Navy, the lead ship of her class.
De Ruyter was laid down on 16 September 1933 at the Wilton Fijenoord dockyard in Schiedam, launched on 11 May 1935 and commissioned on 3 October 1936 by Captain A. van der Sande Lacoste.
In the Battle of the Java Sea on 27 February 1942, De Ruyter was the flagship of the Dutch Admiral Karel Doorman.

The De Ruyter class was a class of light cruisers of the Royal Netherlands Navy, named after the famous Dutch admiral Michiel de Ruyter.
Her main battery (7 150mm guns) was underpowered in comparison to other light cruisers of the time (for example the British Leander class), and the class had inadequate armour as well.
De Ruyter was sunk in the Battle of the Java Sea in 1941.

The De Zeven Provinciën class (also called Eendracht class) was a class of light cruisers of the Royal Netherlands Navy; the "De Zeven Provinciën" or "The Seven Provinces" name refers to the United Provinces, as the Netherlands were called from 1581 to 1795.
However, in 1944 the ship that was to become De Ruyter was complete enough to be used as a blockship for the Nieuwe Waterweg.
De Ruyter was decommissioned in 1973, and De Zeven Provinciën in 1975.

The ADBA force consisted of the cruisers HNLMS De Ruyter (flagship), HNLMS Tromp, USS Houston, and USS Marblehead escorted by the Dutch destroyers Bankert, Piet Hein, Van Ghent, and the United States destroyers Barker, Bulmer, Edwards, and Stewart.
Doorman was forced to retire to Tjilatjap to protect the damaged cruisers and the Japanese force captured Balikpapan.

The ABDA forces engaged at Badung Strait were decisively defeated in the battle of the Java Sea on 1 March 1942, in which the Dutch cruisers Java and De Ruyter were sunk and Admiral Doorman was killed.
