HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerk was a Tromp-class light cruiser of the Royal Netherlands Navy, named after Admiral Jacob van Heemskerk (1567–1607).
She was commissioned on May 10, 1940, when Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands.
Jacob van Heemskerk was the last of the two Tromp-class cruisers.

They were ordered in 1935; HNLMS Tromp was launched in 1937, and her sister ship HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerk in 1939.
Jacob van Heemskerk was still being completed in the naval shipyard in Den Helder when the German attack started on May 10, 1940, but she succeeded in escaping to the United Kingdom, where she was completed.
Both ships survived the war, Tromp to be decommissioned in 1955 and sold for scrap in 1969 and Jacob van Heemskerk to become an artillery instruction ship in 1947, decommissioned in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1970.

HNLMS De Ruyter was a light cruiser of the Royal Netherlands Navy, the lead ship of De Ruyter class cruiser.
She was originally designed as a 5000-ton ship with a lighter armament due to financial problems and the pacifist movement.
De Ruyter was laid down on 16 September 1933 at the Wilton Fijenoord dockyard in Schiedam, launched on 11 May 1935 and commissioned on 3 October 1936 by Captain A. van der Sande Lacoste.
