HNLMS Tromp is more than just a big, powerful frigate –; she is a glimpse into a future in which a number of maritime forces, including the Royal Navy, hope to have a share.
Tromp (F801) is the latest of the de Zeven Provincien-class, displacing some 6,500 tonnes fully loaded and designed to provide cover against air and missile attack for an expeditionary amphibious force – one of the central planks of Dutch defence strategy.
Although Tromp is fitted with an electronic charting suite, the system is not yet fully certified, so although the electronic version is proving well up to the job, she is actually navigated on paper charts for the time being.

Tromp no. 2 - The armed schooner number 22 (1809-1826) which was built in 1804 as the Admiral C. Tromp was armed with seven cannons with a crew of 50 men.
Tromp no. 3 - In 1805 the 64/68 gunship of the line Maarten Harpertszoon Tromp (1808-1823) was laid down in Rotterdam, launched in 1808 and put into service un Captain I.A. van der Straten on May 5th, 1811.
Tromp no.7 - The HM Tromp was the flotilla leader of the Decker's fleet plan, which was introduced in 1931.

Until his appointment as Commanding Officer of HNLMS Jan van Brakel in December 1986, he worked in the Staff of Admiral Netherlands Fleet as Fleet programmer, responsible for programming the overall year schedules for ships and aircraft within the Royal Netherlands Navy.
In August 1987 he assumed command of HNLMS Abraham Crijnssen and was subsequently relieved as CO of HNLMS Jan van Brakel in November 1987.
From February 1989 until his appointment as Commanding Officer of HNLMS Tromp in June 1990, he served in the Naval Staff in The Hague as Deputy Head of Naval Tactics and Weapons Policy.

The visit by the HNLMS Tromp marks the first visit ever to the United States by a ship of the class of destroyer-sized combatant designed and built by the Royal Netherlands Navy.
HNLMS Tromp is one of four De "Zeven Provincien" Class Air Defense and Command frigates for the Royal Netherlands Navy, built by Royal Schelde at its shipyard in Flushing, The Netherlands.
The primary task of the Tromp is to provide local area air defense against airborne targets for a task group, and to provide the task group with dedicated command facilities.

Both ships survived the war, Tromp to be decommissioned in 1955 and sold for scrap in 1969 and Jacob van Heemskerk to become an artillery instruction ship in 1947, decommissioned in 1969 and sold for scrap in 1970.

In 1956, Jankees Trimpe Burger was born in Rotterdam.
Exceptions are a nine month period as Principal Warfare Officer (Underwater) in the Ops Room of the frigate HNLMS van Kinsbergen, in 1983, and a two year appointment to the British Submarine Service, in 1987/1988, when he also successfully completed the British Submarine Command Course (SMCC) known as "Perisher".
He then became commanding officer of the Multipurpose class (M) frigate HNLMS Willem van der Zaan until October 1997 when he was appointed to the Ministry of Defence in The Hague.

 Plymouth Navy Days 2004
Moving along the quay side you next came across ITS San Giusto (L9894) an Italian LPD dock landing ship on 15W, the next 2 warships on 16W were HNLMS Tromp (F803) and FS Latouche Treville (D646) which had her Lynx 273 out on the flight deck.
Tromp being one of the new Dutch "De Zeven Provincien Class" air defence and Command frigates stood out as one of the stars of the weekend for me, but sadly people who went on the Monday would have missed her and FS Latouche Treville as they both departed early on the Monday morning.
Anchored out in the river Tamar was HMS Albion (L14) as she was due to take a major roll in the displays later in the day but was receiving visitors in the morning before the river displays and later in the afternoon after the displays had stopped.
