Topic: HP 65

Hewlett-Packard - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HP was founded in 1939 by Bill Hewlett and Dave Packard, who had both graduated from Stanford University in 1934, as a manufacturer of test and measurement instruments.
HP is acknowledged by Wired magazine as the producer of the world's first personal computer, in 1968, the Hewlett-Packard 9100A.
HP is recognized as the symbolic founder of Silicon Valley, although it did not actively investigate semiconductor devices until a few years after the "Traitorous Eight" had abandoned William Shockley to create Fairchild Semiconductor in 1957.

HP managed to fit their programs in a small, low-power, handheld unit by using an exceptionally clever and fast method of calculating these functions -- the Cordic technique.
HP called it a "Scientific Portable Printing Calculator" to distinguish it from the smaller models and from their much bigger desktop models.
Apart from HP's usual reluctance to advertise, further reasons for the low sales may be that the target market was not aware of HP calculators, and that the tiny printer was reputed to be unreliable.

 HP Secure Web Console
The typical installation of the HP Secure Web Console, after completion of the initial configuration and set-up, is to install the device near the desired HP 3000 system.
Once connection to the HP SWC's internal micro HTTP webserver is established, a Java application is downloaded to the connected client node, which from then on acts as the interface for all communications between the client and the attached HP 3000 server.
The HP Secure Web Console comes with embedded firmware, including an HTTP micro web server 100% pure Java application, which is provided in a compact box with a small footprint measuring only 180x105x30mm(the same size as a VHS video cassette tape).

HP CALCULATOR HISTORY - THE HP-65   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
on January 19 1974, this was the fourth handheld electronic calculator sold by HP, and the third scientific model.
HP sold sets of programs on particular topics, bundled together as "program pacs".
The arrival of the HP-65 prompted Richard Nelson to set up PPC, the first club for users of HP handhelds; indeed it is possible that this was the world's first club for users of computers, as opposed to the few clubs which already existed for people who were building their own micros at the time.

 HP CALCULATOR HISTORY - HP-67
The competition were catching up and HP had to overtake them (did the codename mean that HP were keeping a sharp lookout for the opposition?), so the HP-67 improved on the HP-65 with new functions, more memory, and the ability to store data as well as programs on magnetic cards.
The "primary" and "secondary" registers could be swapped so the secondary ones could be used to hide a set of values while some other calculation was carried out using a new primary set.
These secondary registers were used by the statistics functions, avoiding the problem common on HP calculators that statistics operations destroy data in some of the numbered registers.

 HP-65
Just 18 months after introducing the first pocket calculator with transcendental functions, HP introduced a pocket calculator that was programmable with a magnetic card reader/writer.
The HP Journal introduced it as "The Personal Computer" long before that term had become common.
In contrast to the HP 48, where programming is confined to a chapter at the end of the book, the HP-65 manual had the user enter their first program by the fourth page of the introduction.

HP Virtual Museum: Hewlett-Packard-65 programmable pocket calculator, 1974
The HP-65 was HP's fourth handheld electronic calculator and its third scientific calculator.
Nicknamed "Superstar," the HP-65 was the first magnetic card-programmable handheld calculator, which is why some call it the "world's first handheld computer." The HP-65 could read from and write to magnetic cards, allowing the user to buy program cards from HP or save programs on cards.
Although the HP-65 was similar to the HP-35, HP's first handheld scientific calculator, new features included a card reader, the slot to hold a card below the display and the second slider switch to select program or run modes.

 The HP-35 Calculator
The HP-35 is of special interest to collectors because it was the first HP handheld, and the world's first handheld calculator with transcendental functions, so I give more details of it than of other models.
The June 1972 issue of the HP Journal describes this technique on pages 10 and 11, and provides other details of the HP-35 and references to further articles about the Cordic technique.
Within each section there are general remarks on the whole family, followed by the individual calculators - the model number and the HP name for it are given, then a description, and in some cases a few notes on its features.
